Clip to ScrapBook #1

After more than 20 years teaching, I have one new Spanish speaking student. Where do I begin?? Envisions math is word heavy and impossible to use with her. Making up computation activities with manipulative to asses what she knows about addition and subtraction.

Our Spanish teacher's schedule is full and tries to help but that's not the answer. I'm collecting pictures of daily life, school, animals to help with vocabulary and I'm using google translate. She's reading level b books with me.

Our school has no ESL plan in place at this time.

Any resources you can share would be appreciated.

this web site for ESL students, parents and teachers is very helpful:
http://colorincolorado.org

You can search "ELS classroom supports" and pick and choose those that seem congruent with your situation.

There's a series of books from the SIOP model that is very supportive. It lists a huge number of methods of curricular support for language learners. You may be able to find one in your district's professional library or through interlibrary loan, since they are expensive.

Here's a publisher's link:
https://www.pearsonschool.com/index.cfm?locator=PS2rWo

Here's a link to an excellent summary of some of the support techniques:
https://esol.leeschools.net/SIOP/pdf/SIOP%208.pdf

Searching "SIOP strategies" will lead you to other sites which have created supports based on the SIOP model.

Enjoy your new opportunity. She's very lucky to have an experienced teacher who is willing to integrate her experience with new learning.

Do you have any ipads that you can use in your classroom and some headphones. Surely there's some apps out there, that could help her? Also, do you have 3rd and 4th grade students at your school? Maybe you could work out a deal with an upper-grade teacher and have one of his/her students tutor her? Also, do you have any parent volunteers that you could utilize or a local business that you could contact to get help?

Quizlet has many already available content vocabulary sets in both Spanish and English. They also have everyday school and life word sets to help learn English vocabulary. It is not an ideal situation, but front loading vocabulary will be a must. The idea of a peer tutor or older student tutor, is ideal. Our district provided Title III funds for tutors. It may be something to check into.

Also, use Spanish.dict for translating - my high school ESOL students say it is the most reliable. AND any Google doc can be translated to Spanish: left click - translate to..... Spanish --- click translate.
