Does anyone have any creative ideas for teaching addition and subtraction with regrouping? I am trying assist the students in 2nd grade who are really struggling with this. They are confused especially with subtraction problems and do not know when to regroup.

It could be they need to work on place value and understand the underlying concept before getting the hang of subtraction.

Thank you, we'll revisit place value.

I'm curious, did revisiting place value solve the problem? We are hardly ever told if a suggestion works or not.

Manipulatives, manipulatives, manipulatives! I would spend a minimum of three days with them. Each child had a tens and ones work mat (the two column one) and ones and tens cubes/sticks. We would physically move the cubes between the two columns to show regrouping. It reinforces place value and the concepts of borrowing and carrying.
