Student's Don't Care About Learning?

What do you do when students just don't seem to care about learning? I've offered/given incentives, stressed to them the importance of learning the material and passing the state test, etc but many just don't seem to care. They'd rather talk or play around rather than pay attention to instruction or do classwork. I'm just tired.

I'm a bit more optimistic. It's not that they don't want to learn, but that the content is not relevant to them. So, for myself, I always make it relevant to them.

Think of it this way: if I was teaching you "How to disengage fungus by bureaucratic IRS tax conversation", a majority of folks would not care. However if I was teaching "How to trick your students into teaching themselves" most people here would be in the front seat with notebook and pen in hand.

This is where the art of teaching comes in and not just its science. I have to admit, I struggle in this area as well. It is tiring coming up with strategies in order to engage students. Press on. It sounds to me like you're just venting and you probably have better ideas in making that horse drink!

What grade(s) do you teach? What works for young children may not work for adolescents or teenagers.
