Is anyone else not off today? We are not off today or Monday. It is a ghost town. We even have low attendance.

Oh wow. We're off today, and I would have thought every school in the US would be. Did you have a fall break?

Is it typical to have Veterans Day off? I don't ever recall having it off and I taught for 33 years.

I can't ever recall being off for Veteran's Day in my 35+ years of being a student or teacher. I am home sick though.

I thought we NJ teachers were the only ones off. We've had off a Thursday and Friday for the NJ Teachers' Convention since I was a little kid. But we don't get a "fall break." I have never gone to the convention (though I did briefly consider it this year, since I don't have a child or dog at home anymore) but $$. Decided to stay home. This long weekend always occurs at the end of the marking period so there is always plenty of grading and school-related work to do.

We close for federal holidays. So we are closed for Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Martin Luther King's birthday and Wshington's Birthday (President's Day.) I am actually surprised that there was garbage pick up today because normally our town offices are closed and everything official shuts down. The contract with the waste management company apparently changed because they came around collecting today.

In my state (CA), Veterans' Day was always a recognized holiday, with the day off on Monday.

We were always off. Off on the actual day if it fell on a weekday and then a Friday if it fell on a Saturday or Monday if it fell on a Sunday.

Every other district around us is off.

We have never observed Veterans Day with a day off of school, and I believe most districts around us are the same way. However, our students do not have school today due to parent teacher conferences.

We are off. We've had two nights in a row of parent teacher conferences, so Veteran's is tied into that to give us a day off. We do it every year.

Wisconsin doesn't recognize
Old 11-10-2017, 10:19 AM

I heard on the news the other day that Wisconsin is the only state that doesn't recognize Veteran's Day as an official paid holiday for government workers.

When I was teaching we never had the day off but had an amazing Veteran's Day program and from what I hear it's getting bigger and better every year.

Our school had p/t conferences YESTERDAY but had school today! Weird. Apparently half of the middle school got sent home because one wing had no heat and we are at 24 degrees outside right now. The 5-6 graders are happy but I'm sure the 7-8 graders are ticked they have to stay.

With my education business, I taught at schools in both Illinois and Wisconsin. The Wisconsin schools never had Veterans Day, Columbus Day, Presidents Day, or Martin Luther King Day off.

All of my Illinois schools had all off except most did not have Veterans Day off. Some of my schools in both states were off on that day due to conferences or inservices though.

This year is different

In the past we always had a long weekend for Veteran's Day (Friday and Monday off). This year we only have Monday off.

Additionally, I teach at a Charter school; so although all the public school districts around me are off (most for the entire week) for the teacher's convention..we had a regular week of school.

I can't ever remember NOT having it off as a student or a teacher. In my early 50's now. In New England. It is also my brother's birthday We either get the 11th off or the Monday or Friday, which ever is closest, if it is on a weekend.

We do not get Columbus Day. We do get Civil Rights Day (MLK). We get a Feb and April week break, so we do not get President's Day or Patriot's Day (a MA, New England thing) unless it happens to be during that week we have off. We get nothing extra at Easter, off for Memorial Day, out by mid/late June depending on snow days to make up.

The schools around here are open today. Yesterday and today are half days with parent conferences in the afternoon.

I'm retired, but I always worked on Veterans Day and Columbus Day.

I've never had veterans day off as a student or teacher in WI. We also don't get Columbus or MLK Days off either in the districts I've been in.

I have never had Veterans Day off in this state, and I've worked in 3 different schools here. Schools in my home state are closed for it. I mentioned that at work today and people were really surprised to hear that some schools were closed.

Like others, no school around here is off today--and I never remember having Veteran's Day off in my life...as a student or a teacher.

We get no Fall Break either--it's not a thing around here.

Teachers do not get a day off between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. (And I do mean Thanksgiving Day. We have a teacher's day the day before.) We do have off Thursday, Friday, and Monday for Thanksgiving though.

Neither my district or the district my kids attend are off. Both districts held assemblies to honor our veterans. We've been doing these for the past 5 years or so.

We were in school. We always have a nice assembly that the K-5 students put on for veterans. We always had the day off until about 10 years ago. I'm in Illinois.

I am retired but our district was out today. DH was off. Years ago they took away Veteran's Day for a hurricane make up day but the local veterans had a fit so no one ever messed with it again! I am pretty sure they never will either.
