In the sentence, The smarmy guy was oiler than a soggy sack of fries, is "oilier than a soggy sack of fries" a simile or metaphor. I am truly blanking.

It is a tricky one because it does not use “like” or “as” as similes do.

We’ll see what others say.

It is a simile. While most common, like and as aren’t the only comparison words used to make a simile. Than can be a connecting word as well.

I say it's a simile, too. The comparison is there in "than a". If it were a metaphor, it would read something like, "The smarmy guy is an oily sack of fries" or something like that.
