Tangent on Hope Chests

I didn't want to hijack the hope chest thread, so started an ancillary one.

Anyone have a Lane cedar jewelry box?

When my sisters and I graduated from high school, each girl received a Lane cedar jewelry box from the local furniture store. All you had to do was go down there. I'm sure the Lane company did it as a promotion to purchase their hope chests.

My mother-in-law gave hers to my older daughter, but she really doesn't want it. So I have set it aside and will offer it to our younger one (who is, by far, the more sentimental of the two anyway).

My MIL's box is on the left (from 1950), and on the right is mine (from 1975). They didn't change much, did they??!

I got mine in 1969, and it looks just like those above. I still use it for jewelry.

Senior women in local high schools were given a voucher, and we went to pick them up at a local furniture store. It was a sweet tradition. I have no idea how many actual Lane hope chests were sold because of the promotion. I only got the miniature one they gave for free.

I still have mine! It's on my dresser with other jewelry boxes and mementos.

Pretty cool, huh?

BTW, I failed to mention on the other thread that my Hope Chest is a cedar chest. Smells divine!

I had one

It was given to me by my mother in law. Smelled so good when you opened it up.

After my divorce I gave it to my son with a new watch in it and told him it had belonged to his grandmother and he should keep it as a family heirloom.

I have had mine since 1968. My DH has the one that belonged to his sister. She graduated in 1951. It is sad that young kids not all don't want sentimental items anymore.

Yes! This is mine. My father was the manager of a local furniture store for over 20 years so I think he was more excited about this at the time that I was. I got it when i graduated high school in 2002. I also have a Lane Hope Chest with a matching design on the top. My dh and I were high school sweethearts so itís full of notes that he wrote me during our high school years. Sweet memories now.

I got mine in 1978. The family run furniture store that gave them out is going out of business after 60 years, which is really sad. My family and I bought so much of our furniture there over the years.

Yes, I have one also!! Mine is from 1977.

I also have a "regular" sized hope chest but DH bought it for me after we were married. I had always wanted one. Love that cedar smell.

Well, now that explains the background for the box I got when we were cleaning out my mom’s things! I had no idea where it was from but kept it because it looked cool. I am sure she got it like others mentioned— a freebie after graduating.

Yes! I also was given one in high school, as was every other girl. I still have mine. I keep the letters my DH wrote me when we were dating in it. 😊 💕

I have mine! Iíd forgotten all about how I got it, but now I remember. It was a gift from the furniture store. Never did get a hope chest, but I always wanted one.

Love this reminder! Thanks Beach Glass!

I remember that offer and I know my sister got one (in 1984? '85? I can't remember). I didn't get one, but I don't remember why not. Was it because I didn't want one (I wish I had one) or because they weren't doing it my hear (1989) around me? I have no memory of why not!
