explaining directions

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Every year I have the same problem. I will gather everyone on the rug, we will sit in a circle so everyone can see, and I will explain the directions for the math game or partner activity. I will even model the directions with a student, and then pick 2 students to show everyone else on the rug what to do. BUT STILL, I send them off to play the game with a partner and there are always students who either have no idea how to play or are playing completely wrong. I try to balance partners so that there is usually 1 partner who knows what they're doing but they're first graders and the ones that listen are few.
I would LOVE to hear how others solve this problem so that students follow directions after explaining a game or activity.
thanks

You could teach it first in small groups, so that every child has a chance to play the game before they have it in independent practice.

To teach math games in small groups, teach the game to your parent volunteers. Then they can teach it to the small groups.
