This is not an unreasonable expectation!

It's January of 3rd grade. It's not unreasonable to expect 3rd graders to capitalize the beginning of a sentence and proper nouns. Especially since we've been working on it all year (and they should walk in knowing it).

They learn something and don't retain it AND have no accountability for their learning. They want everything spoon fed. I'm so beyond MY frustration level right now. Even the most basic skills that we've been working on all year are still a struggle.

I'm teaching 4th and 5th. Today I told the students we were going to work on a project, and one of the students asked whether they would have to remember all the stuff they'd been working on in that class. I said yes, and his response was, "Oh, brother."

Third Grade...

When I collect my third grader's work, I do not remind them about capital letters for sentence beginnings and people's names.

When the bell rings for recess, I dismiss those students who did it correctly the first time. The other students remain in their seats and make corrections until it is done the right way. They bring it to me to make sure it is correct before heading for recess. This means they may miss all of recess...too bad, so sad!!

Within a week, very few students will be in for recess. They will capitalize correctly all the time, or make very few errors that only take a minute or two to correct before recess.

When you start making it the child's responsibility, things will quickly change.

It works every time!!

In our district, we have all these standards broken down by grade level mastery on a sheet. So I use this as a guide with students and during parent conferences. I hold them accountable to the skills they should have mastered by this point.

If you send me your email, I will send you a copy of it.

Kerteach, we do too, but itís more of a b!tch fest. Thereís not much discussing.

And my team mate talk about it on the treadmill when we walk.

And donít even get me started on addition that should have been review and we just spent 3 days on it. They retain nothing.
