I am looking for a great writing program that will include multiple choice questions, short constructed responses, and extended responses. Do any of you have a suggestion where to look?

It is a grade level purchase for 4th/5th.

Thanks!

I Read To Write

You can request a free sample that they’ll send you. It is awesome and just what you described above. It has three sections: math, science and social studies. Each of those has 3 paired passages related to the topic (fiction/nonfiction and a variety of types like expository, persuasive) Each passage has close reading questions where kids have to refer back to the text to highlight answers. They have multiple choice and short answer for each passage. Then after you’ve read 3 related passages, there are writing prompts for an essay. There are 3 prompts per section: an expository, a persuasive, and a narrative or literary responses. Students have to synthesize info from all 3 passages to write a piece that uses evidence from the passages. There are graphic organizers and rubrics to go with it.

I really enjoyed using it. It was a great way to tie in the content areas and the kids got very good at using the passage for evidence and WRITING longer answers.

The only downside is it is expensive. It comes in consumable student booklets, so you have to purchase yearly. But it also has a test prep component that mirrors the new testing formats (not just multiple choice). If you can get your principal to purchase it, it’s well worth the money!
