Please share the details of your reading block. I had meetings today and am feeling frustrated. By the end of my meeting I got the impression that what I am doing is wrong and somehow I am not doing enough to meet the needs of my students. Here is what I do...any suggestions? I hate my schedule and how many interuptions there are but I cant change anything about that.
Thanks...feeling inadequate, unappreciated, and like a failure.

Math block for 75 min.....
25 min.- readers notebook and novel studies (common core guided)
Recess...
45 min - reading groups (3 groups, 15 minutes each)
Grammar - teacher led group
Spelling - independent
Basal Reading passage, with questions and discussions - adult aid leads this group
Lunch...
20 min. Reading comprehension using online readworks program
Specials...
20 min small group fluency building
Recess
15 min. Silent reading and accellerated reader so I can progress monitor and do necessary weekly one on one fluency assessments
Science or Social studies in the afternoon

You seem to have a lot of time. We are suppose to have 60 minutes reading Bloch and 40 reading intervention (the kids on reading IEP's, ELL, and lower readers pulled out so I have less students). I do a added bit of Word Sorting time.

Beginning of day: 20 minute word sorting (I meet with a small group a day as Thievy are broken up into groups for word sorting )
20 minute "Job Time" (I meet with a small group and others choose a daily 5 choice...I modified the choices to: read to self, read to someone, read with technology, word work aka vocabulary, and respond to reading)
4o minute writing block
Break for specialist
20 minute reading lesson (often shared reading)
20 minute "Job Time" same as above
Reading intervention starts so after other kids leave I do 2 more reading job times so I can meet with 2 more groups

Sometimes my lesson requires more time so we only do 4 job times.
Is your reading block similar to the other teachers? Maybe they would have an idea, or you could ask. People have very strong opinions on reading instruction based on varied philosophies.

I think you are doing great things in your reading block. Don't question yourself or expect that you can do even more than what you are already doing.
It sounds so scheduled, time crunched and a ton of prep work!

My literacy block starts with an oral phonics program where the students write the dictated words on whiteboards. We have a quiz at the end of the week where they apply the rules. We then meet for a read aloud (usually related to science/math/social/health theme) with a specific reading strategy modelled. I use a modified daily 5 which includes read to self, work on writing(wow), listen to reading(ipads-RAZ kids). This year everyone does the same rotation and we meet in between rounds, which are usually 20 minutes. Some years, they get to choose the activity, not this group...yet. While the students are in the rotation, I meet with a strategy group and then they join the others while I continue conferencing one on one. Sometimes I will assess reading levels.
I have a separate focussed writing time once a week.
Any time they are done their work, the spare time activity is READ. I always ask, "how will I know you are done ______?" They answer, "we'll be reading."

Hope that helps.
