D5 and testing?

My prince stopped in my room during my ELA block when I was giving an assessment. He said I shouldn't do that, but to give it during D5. Now, we've been using the strategies of D5 for a few years and I have never seen where it said to give a test during this time.

Do any of you assess during your D5 time?

D5= Daily 5? I've assessed kids during D5 before, but it's part of my ELA block, so I'm confused. Can you clarify more?

When I used D5 and then moved on to readers workshop, assessments were done during that time. I pulled kids for the one on one test while everyone went about their reading work. DRAs could take weeks.

What type of assessment were you giving?

We do formative assessments in phonics to whole group which is a dictation type of assessment. Other things like ORR, progress monitoring (i.e. letter recognition, sight word recognition) and other types of individual assessments are done when I work with small groups and the other students are doing D5.

It was a whole class quiz on fact and opinion. No DRAing or progress monitoring going on.

In that case yes Iíve had that as part of a D5 requirement before they move onto their choices. Iíve also given that type of quiz for a.m. work.
