On the 98th day of school. I have a great 5th grader who has horrible grammar. Every single day he has asked me "Can I go get me a drink?" Every day I correct him and make him ask me again. Today he self corrected! He is a very good student and I would hate to see his grammar limit him in the future.

That's a true breakthrough! I suspect that he is finally starting to develop an ear for standard grammar. I congratulate you on your persistence. Most of us would have given up before day 98.

To be fair, though, this is probably how his family speaks. I teach in a large ESL community. (I know this child probably isn't ESL). I'm used to nonstandard English being used at home.

I live in rural Appalachia. Everyone speaks using non standard English. I always correct it in my classroom, however. He has just been a really tough case. Just because "thats how they speak at home" doesn't give them a free pass in my room.

I teach in the western mountains of VA. I canstantly hear "they was" or "they come" instead of "they were" and "they came". It drives me crazy. I correct them each time, but it seems I am wasting my time. Even my husband makes these mistakes and I have been correcting him since we got married.
