Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am in search of titles of chapter books (reading level grades 4-6) that have characters who are related across several generations; for example, a book with a daughter, mother, and grandmother.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't read it in years so I don't know if it's appropriate but how about The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan?

Wonderstruck by Brain Selznick is a great book. It's two stories in one book. Half the book is told in text through the PoV of a young boy, but other half of the book is told in only pictures thought the PoV of a young girl. At about 3/4 of the way through, their stories intersect in a surprising way. The book is 400 pages, but about 230 of the pages are pictures, so it looks big but it's actually a regular novel when you disregard the pictures.

Fourteenth Goldfish is great. The teenage girl's grandfather is a scientist who has figured out how to reverse aging. He shows up, moves in with his adult daughter, and granddaughter-all generations learn a lot about each other.

It has a cool sci-fi storyline mixed with a touch of school drama, and tons of great family interaction. It's by Jennifer L. Holm of the Babymouse and Squish series.

Inside Out and Back Again by Thanh Lai

The main character reluctantly accompanies her grandmother to Vietnam for the whole summer. Like a typical teenage, she worried about missing out the fun she would be having her her friends back home. The more she learned more about her family and how the Vietnam War affected them, she begins to understand her identity and family.

The Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt

Probably for 6th and up but a great story of 4 siblings (focused mostly on the oldest girl) who are basically abandoned by their mother and go in search of their grandmother

Under the Blood Red Sun by Graham Salisbury

It's the story of a Japanese-American boy living in Hawaii, whose father and grandfather are put in a concentration camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The main characters are middle school age-ish; but the AR book level is 4.0.

I really liked Allie, First at Last by Angela Cervantes and Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan from this year's Sunshine State Young Readers list for 3rd-5th grade. They both have multi-generational families and portray older generations in a positive light.
