Cell phone / cruise ship question

DS22 goes on an NCL cruise this weekend as a job reward ( lucky him!). He is not going to use his phone/ will turn off data for the trip due to expense of using it on the ship( we have Verizon and I checked options) but my question is while the ship is still docked in Miami will it connect to land towers( so part of his plan) or ship tower ( so $$$) so he knows when to be sure to shut it down?

We were able use it the whole time we were docked. It is nice to be away from your phone for a week. It is relaxing to not feel compelled to check it all the time. I hope he has a great time!

We've always called our kids when we get on board. Sometimes we are still talking during sail away, we will turn the phone off when we get out of the port and into the Atlantic. He can put it in airplane mode to use it for music or camera. Check to make sure the cellular data is off, too.

Yes. Also on port there is typically a place to get WiFi right off the ship.

I think most carriers show you on your phone when you are roaming.

I would assume if you're docked there is no way you'd be in roaming data yet. When I went on a cruise this summer my friend and I turned off our phones and put them in the safe shortly after getting on board. We were about to be without them for a week, so what was a couple more hours?
I thought not having my phone would bother me more than it did. I didn't really miss it that much!
