activities for "prewriting"?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

what activities (besides brainstorm and list writing) do you have kids do to spark ideas before writing? (i don't mean watching a video or reading text)

here is what i'm doing:

we're about to begin writing essays for the next few weeks. i'd like to share some methods of the beginning of the writing process.

we're reading about manatees--before we write, we'll just talk this one out--what are the concerns with manatees?

we're doing Scholastics Breaking Barriers essay contest focused on Jackie Robinson--we'll read an article--then they'll do a Quick Write on how they would feel, how they would react

before we write an essay on our favorite holidays, i'll have them fill in Alphaboxes (one idea for each letter of the alphabet)

after a quick search online, i found these "new" ideas:
freewriting--which i kind of lumped in with brainstorming
drawing--i like this!
clustering/mapping was mentioned, but i use that for them to ORGANIZE their writing--don't want to confuse them

do you use any prewriting strategy that i might like to hear about? thanks!
