If you are going out for an expensive meal, how much are you spending per person?

More than $20 for an entree

$20 for entree and drink is at the high end of my "maybe... ok" range My normal max is $12 entree.

I agree with Grace. More than $20 an entree is pretty fancy, to me. But then again, I don't order things like steak that tend to be pricier. I do eat at restaurants that have entrees well over $20, but I don't order them. I don't have fancy taste buds.

We went to Pappadeax's and I ordered a $28 meal. It was SO GOOD!

Went again the next year. I hope they have it the next time, because it is the dish I plan on ordering.

I agree with Grace. It seems like you can't get a meal most places under $10. $12 seems about middle of the road for decent places. I try to keep my meal in that 10-$14 range and will distinctly pick the lower meal price unless there is something very appealing. Now that we are older we often split a meal and maybe get an additional garden salad. Feels cheap, but we don't do it to save money - do it to save calories.

I agree with Grace! About $20 is the max for me and is considered an expensive meal to DH and me. We rarely spend more than $30 for the two of us combined. We are generally not drinkers so that keeps our bill down.

I would consider anything $30 and above for just one meal (not drinks) to be pretty "fancy." Having more than one alcoholic drink can definitely drive up a tab quickly!

I have noticed though that things seem to be getting more and more expensive. In my area, even drive-through/basic take out places are now often around $9-12 for a single meal. For a sit-down place that's a casual chain, between the food, tip, and just pop for a drink I can typically expect to spend around $20-25 just for myself.

I'm with GraceKrispy... I know more than $20 isn't fancy by a lot of people's standards but our regular places are $20ish for our family of 4 (mostly McAlisters).

But we're a family of four on one teacher salary, so we don't do expensive meals.

I'd say we stick with mostly under $20 a meal, but have gone to places where it's $30-50.

It also depends on where you live. NYC is so freaking expensive!

Boy works at a high end restaurant where the entrees start at $26 and go up to $50 for a 12 oz steak. We've gone there twice (no employee discounts) and dropped about $200 for dinner for the two of us. It's fabulous but only for Very Special Occasions.

We go out big twice a year (my birthday and our anniversary) to my favorite restaurant and usually spend about $200 for the two of us. But cocktails and apps start at $13, so...it adds up quick!

In southern CA we usually average around $50 for a meal for the two of us.
Recentlyish we did a Sunday brunch that was around $50 each and with drinks and tip it was pricey but worth it. We plan on doing it again when school lets out to celebrate.

Other than that it's only been a handful of times we were in that range or higher.

Good Question

It makes me think we love cheap eats- burgers, Mexican food, Italian food, home cooking comfort foods and Chinese. We probably spend an average of $15 dollars for an entree.

When we go out for birthdays, anniversary or a holiday like Valentine's we usually spend about $35 for an entree and sometimes the sides are priced separately. If we have an appetizer or dessert it gets expensive. Maybe $55 dollars a person. That is why we do not eat fancy at a restaurant very often.

I consider fancy and expensive to be different things. Anything over $20 per person is expensive to me, but the places that I consider fancy are more like $40-$50.

Fancy implies elegant decor, finishing touches on meals, high end service, etc. Expensive is high cost and varies from person to person.

Any place that is al la carte and order separately.

We usually stick to anything in the teens $ wise.

For our aniversary, we go to a really nice steakhouse. Last year the bill was $175. But we donít buy gifts for each other.

An expensive meal for us would be an entree that costs between $15-$20. It rarely happens because I just can't justify spending that much money on food. It kills me whenever we take our family out (6 of us) and the bill comes to about $80. I could never enjoy a meal that cost more than $15 because of the guilt of the cost, even if someone else was paying the bill.

Anything over $20/person would be fancy to me. DH, DS, and I took SIL to a Chinese buffet Friday night which was $12/person and I almost flipped. Hahaha Our bill was a week's groceries!

A fancy meal, in my opinion, is $30/person.

that our definitions of fancy meals amount to little more than the tip for others higher up the food chain.

Well this evening I am going to hyperventilate when I order a $13 salad and over $50 for even the cheapest steak. This better be the best food I have ever put in my mouth

Fancy? Expensive?

A non national, non chain restaurant, with a true professional staff...$200 for dinner excluding adult beverages.

I'm talking restaurants that would be on an Anthony Bourdain show.

$100/meal is a bit pricey for me, but I also look at it's the evening out. I'd rather spend that on an decent sushi restaurant, take my time eating, then wolfing down pasta at the Olive Garden or mystery fish Red Lobster. Both of those places have all the charm of a Saturday morning flea market in 90F heat. Oh course, my MIL LOVES both places.

I don't drink, so my bill is usually a lot lower even in $$$ places.

With drinks runs us about 140.00. It makes a big difference if we try and keep the drink tab down!

Once a year we go to The Melting Pot for Valentines Day dinner and pay around $100 total for the two of us. We have the standard package four course meal and have only water to drink.

The rest of the year we stay at $9 to $15 entrees where the whole meal for 2 is about $25 -$30

There are only two of us. I canít imagine taking a whole family of 4 or more to dinner. That probably doesnít happen often unless you go somewhere like Culverís or Panera Bread.

We often eat at places where the meals are between $15-$20 per person, so I would guess anything over $20 per person would be considered really expensive. We usually drink water if we get a meal that costs more than $15. That keeps the cost down.

Upscale

We just paid a little over $50 a head for our DSs rehearsal dinner. The restaurant was "upscale casual" and the food was decent. For a regular special occasion I consider anything over $20 to be pricey.

but that would include a glass or two of wine and possibly appetizers. We usually do not get dessert, but may share one, so that could add another $15.
