Got caught!

In a weak moment, I wrote a check to a door to door sales person with a sad story. I usually never open my door!! She had a sad story (of course) and it was buying books to donate to the Ymca. I am pretty sure it wasn't legit, and I am willing to take that loss, but I wrote a check and am worried about that...do you think that could be a problem as far as getting more $, etc? I can't ask my husband..haha.

If it was a local YMCA, you could call to see if it was legit. If you have any doubts, I would stop payment on the check with my bank tomorrow.

Stop payment doesn't stop them from using the account info...checks are so dicey!

Just say no! Stop payment on the check. But it won’t remove you from the list that has them returning to your house.

I think I might confess to it to my husband so that you can have some help getting it fixed. I really think you had better run down to the local police department and talk to someone about fraud protection and do it asap--tomorrow.

Also notify the bank of what you did so they are aware of the amount for the check and that you want to close the account and start a new one with a slight variation in the name such as using your middle initial. This is how identities get stolen.

I'm so sorry you were taken in and that you've got to let your husband know.

Glad you stopped payment and good idea to call the bank! I would also call one of the credit reporting agencies tomorrow and find out what they recommend you do to prevent her stealing your identity.

If you are worried, go in to talk to your bank or call them. Does your check have the routing number and checking account number on it? Can that person use that information to purchase items online? If so, you might need to close that checking account and open a new one. Keep an eye on your account and watch for any unusual transactions.

It has your full name, address, and bank account number...that's waaay too much info in shady hands.

My son sold popcorn for his Scout troop to teachers at my school. The checks were stolen. One of the teachers got a call that someone in Kansas (we are in NM) was trying to get a driver's license in her husband's name. Feds got involved because her husband is a mailman and impersonating a federal employee is a big deal.

It was a huge mess. Be very cautious to whom you give a personal check.

We've all but stopped using checks. I write maybe one or two a year. Transferring money using the bank is safer and easier for the bank to keep track of where my money goes in case of a problem.
