I would like to have a bulletin board for "Dead" Words with other synonyms. I would like another title? Any ideas?

title:
Liven up your writing
or Welcome to Deadword Memorial Garden

steps to your bulletin board:
1-cut out tombstones in grey or beige construction paper
2- write a dead word on one tombstone: (for example: "RIP big")
3- staple two tombstones on top of each other with the RIP one on top
4- on the stone underneath, write all the better synonyms for the word

If any of this is confusing, please PM and maybe I can explain more. Have fun!

I heard of a teacher who held a funeral for the words which were printed on a sheet of paper and folded and buried in a shoe box.

Sorry for the confusion! I would like to use another theme. I am thinking of using gems/jewels or treasures. Any ideas?

Maybe your synonyms could be the "real" jewels and the dead words could be the "fakes". A title might be "Don't Settle For Anything Less Than A Real Gem". You could use cut outs of jewels/gems for the synonyms.

Put the words to Bed!

We talk about "tired" words. We have a big bed on the wall, and add words to it, like said or good. Then we brainstorm all of the synonyms and post the charts around the bed.

Are you talking about words such as, "said" and "then"? Do you mind posting a list of some of your words to give me an idea of what your referencing to?

Give Boring Words the Boot

I don't know if you could use this idea with your treasure theme somehow, but last year I had a board with science words that was titled: "Give Boring Words the Boot". I had a clipart pic of a kid in rain boots with one leg in the air. One side of the board said "Use..." and then had some better words to use and the other side said "Instead of..." with a list of the boring words. Example: Use... increase Instead of... rise and so on. I think I saw it in a Mailbox magazine or something.

If you incorporate pirates you could use pirate boots???

I did something similiar to the graveyard idea last year - we made the headstones and called the board "Let the words RIP". The students made the headstones with the "dead" word and then as table groups came up with the "spicy words" and wrote them on pumpkins (obviously we did it at Halloween time) then we changed them to stones.

This year I am trying to coordinate my whole room with the movie/Hollywood theme so I am going to use popcorn boxes with the the "dead" word on the box and spicey words on popcorn pieces coming out with a title like, "Make Your Writing POP!"

Lock up the words and put them in jail. You can make the long bars of a jail cell on the bulletin board.

How about

1. Side Line Words vs. MVP Words

2. Foul! Words vs. MVP Words

Good luck!

Star Theme?
Old 08-09-2008, 12:55 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #14

For some reason, the bulletin board I'm using for Writing is HUGE, so I was going to do something with "dead" word along the bottom of it.

Any thoughts that go along with a Star theme?

GoldiTeaches---how about Out of this World Words?
Or Shooting Star Words (good) and Falling Star Words (bad)?
Or Comet Words and Burned Out Words?

I just had a thought on my sports theme Dead Words---

I like the pp's ideas about MVP and Sidelined Words....thanks!

What about Benched Words or Words on the Bench and Starting Line-up Words?

Or Homerun Words, Touchdown Words, 3-Point Words and then Out of Bounds Words, Last Place Words....still thinking.....
