What is your favorite desk arrangement for the beginning of the year? I am off to work to arrange my classroom and would love some I put! Thank you.

I'm limited in my room arrangements because of my ActiveBoard. All the kids need to see it. I start my year with the desks in rows, facing the ActiveBoard. I can see the faces of my kidlets and the name tag on the front of the desk. The kids in row 1 can turn their chair to the desk behind them for group work and for think-pair-share activities.

After I learn the names, I place the desks in "tables" of 5 or 6. (I have 29 kids this year.) I'm careful not to have anyone with their back to the ActiveBoard.

It all works somehow. Best to you for a great year!

I do groups of 4: two facing front, and two facing each other. I pretty much leave them that way except during testing, because I do a lot of group work and projects, so this turns the desks into "tables".

I always start the year in rows of 2, so each kid has a partner to sit with, but at the same time, they are learning to face me as I teach from the front of the room. Around November, I move them intro groups of 4-6.

I place desks (double-two students at one desk) in three rows. Three double desks per row. Then three double desks on the two sides of the room.

If that makes sense. I have to add a couple of single desks among that because I have 30 kids.

It's easier for me to make eye contact that way and I think the kids pay more attention to me. Never have liked grouping kids.

I teach first grade. I put their desks in groups of 4, facing each other. I use Kagan cooperative learning strategies and this is their recommended set up. In first, many of our whole class lessons are on the carpet, where they are all facing me.
