Middle school

I was a full-time sub for 5 years before landing my job this year!! YAY!

Anyway, I was thinking about who I would use as a sub in my classroom when I realized that I really don't know many other subs! I recognize faces, but I don't know their names. Many ate lunch in the classrooms. Plus, there are many who won't sub at a middle school - there were so many that refused to teach middle school, I was at them at least 4 days out of the week.

So, my question is......
Do YOU sub at middle schools/Junior high?
Do you turn down those jobs?

subbed for middle school in decades. But I got a job in elementary and taught mostly primary. I also don't like getting up as early as needed to get the lesson plans read and classes figured out in middle school. I don't turn down the jobs, I just don't click on them.

To find your own subs, you might ask the secretaries for recommendations or others in your department.

I live with attitude and hormones. I don't need to work with them too! I'm really just more comfortable in elementary. Some of those older kids are really big and scary!

My favorite age group

I actually prefer middle school, which in my district means grades 6-8. My next favorite is high school. I can tolerate grades 3-5, and survive 1-2, but kindergarten!! UGH.

Middle schoolers are funny to me, and I enjoy this age group. They are fine once you get to know them. My own kids are much older (my oldest is 24 and my youngest is 15) so I am not impressed or intimidated by junior high children. They seem like babies to me so they don't scare me one bit. A lot of subs are scared of middle schoolers and high school students though.

I sub at all schools, but predominantly in midde/junior high schools. I enjoy the kids a lot, I like their wacky sense of humour and spunk, even their immaturity. I enjoy how you can get them passionate and caring about things, they haven't yet become cynical- which i something I find in high schools more that anywhere else. I like how they are at the age where they are old enough to be able to have deep and serious conversations in the classroom, but still not that old that they stopped caring and are only focused on getting good grades.

Yes, they can be and often are more worse behaved as an age level than either the younger or older grades. I rarely ever have behaviour problems that are actually serious enough to involve admin or even having to remove a kid from class, but when they happen, 80% of them are in middle schools. I think every fight I broke up last year involved middle school aged kids lol.

It can be challenging, but it's also great fun. I don't turn down any job, I operate on a "first call first serve" basis. Any teacher or administrator or Aesop robotic call or notice on the screen that I get I take, and I almost never cancel... I only did two times last year, because I accidentally overbooked myself.

If I'm on Aesop and I see a middle school job pop up as well as an early years or senior years job, I almost always take the middle school one. This is my favourite age group to work with as a substitute teacher.

My very favorite group is 5th-6th graders, but I also like middle school & high school. I enjoy elementary classroom from 2nd on up ... I'm with Mercury - kindergarten = ugh.
I also usually take whatever pops up on AESOP first. The only problem with that is that I think I miss out on more assignments in my subject area (music) than I would like to. However, I'll take the sure thing over the wait & see any day.
I don't do PE, and I prefer not to do Special Ed, but have done it in a pinch.
I also really like ESL and gifted.

When I was subbing I enjoyed middle school and always accepted the job if I was available. I admit I was a bit scared my first time or two there, but more because the classes kept changing and I didn't know the names of the students. After a couple of times at the same school I knew the names I needed to.

But because I LOVE LOVE LOVE kindergarten and first grade, I was there more often. I think there may be fewer of us that like working with those little ones!

Cinderella, I think those of you that teach kindergarten should be paid large sums of money. Often.

I only subbed high school and middle school.

I subbed fourth grade once and kindergarten twice only because they were DESPERATE for somebody to sub and the high school and middle school didn't need anybody at all those days.

I hated every minute of elementary schools.

The sub coordinator was happy with me because most people wanted elementary, not secondary. I was a rare sub.

Because the material is the same all day and if a class is acting horribly they will be gone in 75 minutes or less. My true favorite grades are 2nd through 5th. I did quite a bit of 1st grade this year and it is starting to grow on me. Only high school I have ever subbed is as an instructional aid.

I like/enjoy subbing at the middle school level. There are four schools that I sub for and all are on the same schedule. Out of nine periods I teach 5, eat lunch one, have personal planning and team planning (both 1 period) and have administrative assignment one period; generally this is sitting in the hall checking hall passes.

middle school. I would rather sub in ms than hs because in my local hs there is nothing for me to do (give the assignment and supervise). When I want a quiet day i'll go to hs. Middle schoolers are funny and fun to be with. HOWEVER, there is one ms I will not work at anymore because of the behavior...almost made me cry. At my nearby ms I will take any job except PE. I took a woodshop job a couple years ago, after finals, and sat for 6 hours watching a video of football highlights...so bored even though I brought a book.
