I am back in Kindergarten after a LOT of years with older students. Just wondering how others are introducing, teaching and reviewing sight words? How many a week? Thanks for your input.

Our Reading series introduces 1-2 words each week. I made up my own little songs for each word and we sing the songs all the time. I also have the kids keep word card bags. Each week we add our new cards to the bags. We then use the cards to play games. Of course I also have a word wall posted in my room for reference. We look for sight words in our daily morning message, big books and poems.

Our kindergarten sight word test has 100 words, and students are expected to know 50 by the end of the year. In fact, many learn 100 or at least 80. Two new words each week would not accomplish this.

Our kindergarten introduces five each week with a few weeks reserved for review and testing. They have to know the first 100 Fry words, color words, and number words by the end of the year for an A.

I will start in January and our goal as a department is 25-30 sight words by June.
However, it is amazing to see what other schools do!

We follow Reading Street and it introduces 2-3 new words every two weeks. I bought a few things off TPT that offer reinforcement of the words. One set is sight word money, and another has them doing a few different things with the words. I use Heidi Songs DVD's to help teach the words in song form. They really enjoy them I do add other words that we use a lot as well.

We only have about 20 total, so only do one a week. We make a book for each sight word. The kids dictate a sentence, then I cut them up and they have to reassemble and illustrate them. I also have some of them up on the door and they have to read a few in order to go out to recess.
