I made it, but the material came from a lady named Kathryn Robinson. She has a writing book that has lessons for everyday of school and it is in her book. Her website is

WriteMath.com

Her book has materials that can be copied, along with all the lesson plans day to day. It is really great. We had her come and do a workshop at our school.

This is my first time teaching second graders to write paragraphs. I bought the "sandwich" poster- start with a bun that covers everything, 3 juicy details, finish with a conclusion.

I've modeled it and we've done shared writing, but it's hard for them to do it independently. Ideas?

I've had a tough time with my kiddos this year. Last year's class was great with the paragraphs, but I've found that my class this year needs more structure.

The problem was that they weren't even using complete sentences!

Soo....I've taken to giving them a template for their rough drafts:

Beginning Sentence: _______________________________ ____________

Detail Sentences: _______________________________ ___________
_______________________________ ___________________________
_______________________________ ___________________________
_______________________________ ___________________________
_______________________________ ___________________________

Ending Sentence: _______________________________ _____

After editing, we take a Sharpie and cross out the prompts to remind them not to copy that part. We've written about 3 paragraphs in the lst week, and with just this little bit of prompting I've gotten INCREDIBLE paragraphs!

Good luck!

I do the hamburger paragraphs with my kids also. We start very early in the year, so they are pretty good at it now, but it is a long and grueling process.

I post a poster on my wall with topic and concluding sentences.

Topic Sentences

Statement
The town is a nice place to live.

Exclamation
I love this town!

Question
Would you like to live in a nice town?

Concluding Sentences

Just remember...
Just remember the town is really nice.

Thought
I think the town is really nice.

Feeling
I absolutely love the town.

I can't think of the others that are on there. This poster really helps my kids. Then we do a prompt together. We talk about how the topic sentence can't give away details about the story. We name lots of examples of topic sentences. Then we think of 3 details that go with the topic. After that we talk about the concluding sentence and how it is similiar to the topic and can't give away details. We do topic one day, details another and concluding another. We just keep working together on it and on other prompts until they get good. Now my students are up to writing a topic, 3 detail sentences with 2 elaboration sentences for each detail sentence, and a concluding sentence.

Good luck!!
