Assessments

I'm a specialist, so I'm not required to give as many standardized tests as classroom teachers. There is one assessment I have to give to upper grade students, and I'm going through some "what ifs" in my brain.

There's a student I have who is unpredictable. Really defiant, yells out inappropriate things, etc. I've gotten him to do more work than I thought I could this year, but there have been days he refuses to do anything. It's happened maybe 1 or 2 times. What if he has one of those days during the assessment? Has that happened to anyone else?

My assumption is that you would have to write up an irregularity report for his testing. I would suggest trying to get him in a room testing by himself as well, so that if he does have an outburst, you won't have to write an irregularity report for everyone's test in the room.

Are you allowed to give rewards for positive testing behaviors?
No speaking out of turn.
No defiant behavior.
No refusing to work.

I don't even know if this is legal but focus on clearly describing the testing behaviors expected to the class during the test and then offering a reward for following the testing procedures.

Is that allowed in your situation?

It's very "work together" oriented, it's not fill in the bubble. I wish I could say more but I don't want to give too much away or it might be obvious where I work.

I'll try to have a private chat with him and if he does completely meltdown I guess he will have to complete it elsewhere. Or an irregularity report. I'm sure others have had to.

It's very frustrating this whole situation.

I teach students with emotional disabilities at an elementary. It's pretty routine that my students shut down during state testing. The last time half of my students wouldn't answer even the first question.

I do what I can. I don't stress the scores.

I would ask your admin what their expectation is if something happens. That way you have a plan in place and don't have to stress yourself out worrying about "what if"- if something happens, you can follow the plan. Then you also don't have to worry about admin being upset about the way you handle it, since you asked what they wanted to do ahead of time.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I may try to have a word with admin. If I remember to I'll let you know how it goes.
