Last day at school, after 40 years there, was yesterday. Meetings, then a nice retirement luncheon, then off to a new life. Nervous but looking forward to it.

On your retirement, and welcome to the land of seven day weekends! I have been retired 6 years and it is fabulous!

For me, It didnít seem real until the back to school ads started, and I didnít have to be among the first to buy supplies for my class.

Last day for me is tomorrow. I'm on a roller coaster of emotions! Excited, nervous, excited, worried, excited. It's been an incredible career that I've loved. On to a new beginning. Good luck to you TchrFvr! Your posts seem similar to how I feel. Happy summer!

Retirement is wonderful and you will love it. As others have mentioned, there is an adjustment period, but it passes quickly.

Anytime I wonder if I should have retired when I did, I read the posts on the Vent Board and I'm "cured" of my feelings! (I'm sorry for those who are still needing to post there.)

Enjoy retirement and remember that you have earned it!

Wow, what a nice bunch of folks you all are here! Thank you for the good wishes!
Unfortunately, my retirement started off with a "bang" - I got a call from my sister that our dad was in the hospital...still there and it's a tough situation, with dementia exacerbating it all. So much for a relaxing retirement...sigh...at least I am not sitting around wondering what I have to do (smile!)
And at least I have the time to do it without worrying about work (bigger smile!)

40 Years! Wow, what a great accomplishment, but now it's your turn to do whatever you want. It will be hard at first.....but trust me....retirement is wonderful. You've earned it and you deserve it! Like someone already said, if you have any doubts, go read some of the vents on the Vent page and you'll pat yourself on the back for getting out of that mess.

Just read your second post, and I'm so sorry to hear your dad's condition is a big worry now. Prayers and hugs that he's kept safe and comfortable.

...to go and read the "Vents" - I think I will (grin!)
And you are right - it will be hard at first for many reasons including feeling "out of it" in terms of my school. 40 years is a long time. But there's a whole new life out there for me to find and I will find it (smile!)

Wow! 40 years! Congrats! I am sorry to hear about your dad. You will find when life gets difficult, itís easier because you donít have to worry about school, sub plans etc. it also wonít feel like retirement until back to school sales. You will enjoy retirement.

40 years sure is a long time, so I should be "old", but I don't really feel "old." I don't feel any different as a person than I did 20 or 30 years ago. But to be able to say "20 or 30 years ago" sounds "old", too. Weird feelings (grin!) Anyone else feel the same way?

I retired yesterday. 41 years. I feel like I am in my 40s.

I had it tough for the last 10 years and then I realized that I needed help. I spoke to a psychologist for a few meetings. That helped me so much.

I stopped taking everything so personally.

My last year was so much better. I was able to learn how to let things bounce off me.

At our retirement gathering I gave a short speech and it was so nice to be at ease and eloquent.

I remember what Dr Phil said in one of his books. People do what works.

I have watched others get treated the same way as me. Bullying by people in power. Ridiculous demands. Lack of knowledge about the job inside the classroom. Change of philosophy in how we can we higher scores. It is endless because we are working with a vast array of students. We only have them 7-8 hours.

I am so happy to be done. I have missed the last 10 years of my life during the school year. Up earlier working longer. It is over. I am okay with that.

We are "graduates" together!
You have made a difference in the lives of hundreds or students, even though the "powers that be" seem to have lost their way, and you can be proud of that. You have earned your free time, time to do whatever you want to do!
