Busy start of the new year?

School started last Wed.

I already subbed 2 classes and I have one scheduled for Friday. Could have worked today but I passed on it (...one of the perks of being a sub) this morning to sleep in.

How is everyone else doing so far?

...Mike

I usually sub in several districts, but am working in one - was asked to start the first day of school and stay until they hire someone. I hope it's me.

We started school here last Monday 8/19 and have a full plate. Started subbing yesterday and it has turned into a long term sub job through the first semester! It's a very weird situation. Teacher is new and had health problem and only came to school first 2 days. There is no syllabus, lesson plans or organization. Got my work cut out for the first semester! Had to cancel several other sub days that I had already scheduled.

3 days this week and passed on a 4th even though it was a request. Interestingly enough I have 14 jobs booked throughout the school year because of new curriculum meetings and such. I was overwhelmed with requests from 5 teachers for these jobs through next March. This has never happened before and I've been subbing a long time. So I'm off to a good start. A secretary told me today that many subs replaced retired teachers so until they hire more the job frequency should be pretty good.

We haven't even started yet, and I already have three days booked, and more to choose from. I think it's going to be a busy year.

school started August 13 and I haven't been worked yet (but I'm scheduled for one day in Sept.) I'm only available two days a week, so that might be part of it. Also, I'm a new sub, so I don't have any seniority and I'm only on a preferred list for a couple of schools. I've been told things are very slow at the beginning of the school year, but according to you guys, I guess not. Also, we cannot shop for jobs. We have to wait until we are called either by the school, a teacher, or subfinder.

Tons of jobs popping up. Have to deny them all due to no child care for my son.

School started here (TX) on Monday. So far, I've got 7 jobs booked for Sept., and 1 in Oct. My first job is on Tuesday, at my favorite school.

There have been a scattering of jobs, but AESOP is filling up with folks who want Friday off.

Unfortunately, I'm unavailable on Friday. Ah, well.

LAUSD is enforcing their tiered system this year. Tier 1 (first called) are pool and displaced teachers; tier 2 (2nd called) are recently Rif'd teachers and tier 3(last called) are day-to-day subs. At the beginning of the year, there were 500-600 pool teachers for the whole district (North, South, East and West). I think there are fewer now but I can never get through to a person at the sub unit. Even if teachers ro schools request a sub, there is no guarantee that they will get the sub requested because SubFinder has to go through the tiers first.

I havent' worked much this year yet but I have been requested numerous time BUT the job was assigned to a pool teacher .

Limiting yourself to 2 days is difficult and I wouldn't recommend it if you are depending on this job for benefits.

Well that really stinks. It doesn't sound like day-to-day subs have much of a chance. Bet a lot of the teachers aren't too thrilled that they can no longer request their favorite sub.

i'm off to a good start!
Second week of school in my high school and i've had a half day, a full day in art and booked for anatomy and toxicology on friday full day.

i am starting at the bottom again in my building because our secretary retired. So i just needed to be in the building to see a lot of the teachers who always request me. I also gave my email out to new people yesterday.

i've also booked full weeks in january and october already! SCORE

In our schools they are begging for subs, I am new at it and have filled dates up to November. So judging the beginning of the school year it should prove to be a busy one

You might check out subbing for children's centers. I subbed there years ago. These are buildings located on various elementary school grounds providing 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. programming to preschoolers and before and after school for k-6. They were established during WWII and have been continued.

I worked mostly in the Crenshaw District and South Central, but centers are located throughout LA. Santa Monica also had (has?) one or two children's centers. LA has a bunch.
