What Was Your Best Vacation Ever?
Old 08-28-2013, 08:59 AM

I am starting to think of ideas for our 2014 summer vacation. We plan early so everyone can save and make arrangements to be off work. We will stay 7 nights and are open to any destinations in the United States except the ones we have already traveled to as a group. So what was your best vacation destination ever? I need ideas. I will pick 3 since I do all the planning and everyone votes. Some states we have been to and prefer not to venture back to yet are: :Lousiana, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. We are looking to travel to a different region of the world. Thanks for ideas!

My husband and I saved up for a walking tour in Ireland. Absolutely AMAZING! We flew into Dublin, did a tour along the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland then rented a car back in Dublin and meandered for another week-ish.

ETA: Best in US- check out Alaska or the Boundary Waters!

If you are staying in the US, I would say to do NYC and DC. Those are both fun places to see.

If you're looking within the US, try...
-DC, lots to do for all ages and many free museums
-coastal Maine (there's a resort called Sebago which has lots of activities for everyone)
-Alaska, went there this summer and it blew my mind
-USVI---went to St. Croix, it was amazing.

Have fun and let us know which one you pick!

Yellowstone, Pike's Peak, Mt. Rushmore, Denver Mint, San Fran, L. A?! Catalina Island, Seattle & Portland were all great vacation spots. Also loved St. Louis, Niagara Falls (both sides) and Put-in-Bay area as well as Macinac Island area. St. Augustine and Daytona are lovely as well as Savannah. I love history and natural wonders so I like any place where there is a historic tour or a museum. Taos, NM was interesting. I also want to go back to Gettysburg and Antietam at some point. I love The Biltmore Mansion and Asheville area. What about Williamsburg and the Chesapeake (sp?) Bay area? There are so many great places to visit!!!

I LOVED my trip to Belize. I combined some travel by myself with a group tour through REI.

I have nothing but positive things to say about that tour. I'd travel with REI again in a heartbeat.

In the US, my picks are:
Old 08-28-2013, 03:53 PM

Oregon: Portland is the best city in the country, and you are close to Crater Lake, the northern California Redwoods, Mt.Hood, the coast, Willamette Valley, Mt. St. Helens

New Hampshire: (I live here!) only 1-2 hours from Boston, beautiful but hike-able mountains, ever manner of outdoor pursuit, moderate summer temperatures, and 14 miles (woohoo!) of coastline. No sales tax on anything, either

The Southwest: you can easily do the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Bryce Canyone, Zion/Moab and Vegas in a loop trip in one week. It's a beautiful part of the country, but really hot in the summer..we were in Vegas one July and it was 112 degrees. But, "it's a dry heat "

Out of the country: I would go back to Iceland, Northern Wales, The Swiss Alps, the Italian Dolomites, or the Cinque terre. All really need more than a week to appreciate them, though.

Have fun on your trip!

We got in the car with very few destinations in mind and just drove. We figured it out as we went and it was great. I plan on doing the same next summer.

Look up housekeeping cottages near Mt. Desert. Less expensive, some have swimming pools, if you are on the island it is easy to use the bus system to get around, lots of easy ocean side trails, excellent ranger talks. Be sure to walk the Wonderland Trail and take the Tidal Pool ocean talk.

The cottages have kitchenettes to keep meal costs down. Lots of places for picnics in the park and you can put those together before you head out.

You'll have to ask about bedding. You may have to pack your own. There is a Wal-Mart and a T.J. Maxx in Ellsworth (nearest town). Or everyone brings a sleeping bag and pillow.

As soon as it stops raining, we are headed for Seawall Picnic area to have meat kabobs and grilled corn. We had planned it for today, but woke up to a gentle rain.

If you go for the Bar Harbor area in Maine, PM me. My brother and his family lived in Bar Harbor before he was transferred to work in San Francisco (poor thing, right). He rents out his house during the summer and probably knows places that y'all could rent houses.
