Sight reading...

Clip to ScrapBook #1

We were having dictionary races... a fun activity in third grade where we race to see who can find a word first. The "winner" gets to read the definition. I was using the day's luncheon menu for word inspiration and announced "raisin" as the next word.

A young lady found the word quickly and was proclaimed the winner. She gave the page number to the class and then read, "raisin, noun... a dead grape."

By that point I was looking over her shoulder and suggested she was correct, but it actually read, "a dried grape."

Hmmm... perhaps glasses are in order? But what has really been bugging me since the experience is that I am now wondering how many boxes of dead grapes will appear in Christmas stockings!

That is very cute! And I like the idea of the dictionary race. I'm going to write it down for possible ideas for the classroom.

Truthfully, I didn't keep a straight face. But I turned it into a lesson about "resiliency" by pointing out that we can all (including the young lady) laugh at the mistake without laughing at the person.

A teachable moment!

I had a similar thing years ago when a second grader read "beer case" instead of "briefcase." We got a horrible case of the giggles and had to take a break. She's in high school now and all I have to do is look at her and say "beer case" to get her laughing!
