Library on Rotation schedule

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi All,
My principal is toying with the idea of putting the library on the enrichment/extras/specials schedule. It would be a 50 minute block. I am new to the library this year and was wondering if you could share your pros and cons about this idea? She said I would have an aide but they are always pulled for other things, and I don't want to have to count on one. Any feedback would be great!

Thanks!
Janne

I am a related arts class.

I would prefer to not be, but it's nice to have weekly time with ALL students to teach them how to actually use and enjoy the library (in addition to other standards, of course).

As BigBooks mentioned it is nice to see them all every week, but it doesn't allow for a lot of collaboration with the classroom teachers.

This has been done in my school for at least 20 years, when I first started. I was a classroom teacher until 2 years ago when I moved into the media specialist position. As a classroom teacher I liked it, and found collaboration with the MS very easy, as long as I was prepared a few weeks ahead of time with what I needed from her. Now that I am the MS, I find collaborating with the classroom teachers the most rewarding aspect of my job. Besides being able to teach them how to navigate a library and be independent when searching for books, I do a lot of research skills with the students, which is where I do my most collaboration. Again, as long as the classroom teachers tell me a couple weeks ahead of time, I can prepare lessons that support their needs while also teaching my own objectives.
