Just wondering how to go about assessing reading levels at the beginning of the year. I want to use lexiles but I need to assess the students some how in order to use the lexiles. Any help would be great!

their scores from the state test last year. Advanced is above grade level, proficient is grade level, partially proficient is below grade level, and unsatisfactory is scary low. Those may not be your exact categories, but they should correspond.

We have an assessment that we give on the computer every fall and spring (NWEA). I use their incoming NWEA score along with their state test score and place them into groups that way.

More than anything though, I trust my instinct. Watch how kids do in the groups in which they're placed. Too hard? Too easy? Just right? Your observations are the most valuable criteria, I think.
