Speaking of Middle Names

Was your middle name common for its time?

Share your middle name if you'd like.

My middle name is Rebecca. I'm not exaggerating when I say every friend I had had the middle name Ann except one that had Lee. So while Rebecca is a pretty common name, it was uncommon as a middle name in my day. I think.

ETA: I remember asking my mom to change my middle name to Ann. She was not cooperative.

I think there were a lot of girls with Lee as a middle name. Mine is spelled Leigh though and for a long time I wanted to go by it because my first name was so common.

I hated this name as a kid but love it now. The hospital had told my mom she HAD to ahve a middle name (she didn't want one) and so my dad chose it because my cheeks were the color of the roses he brought to my mom when I was born. AWWWW!

Frances. My mother always checked which Saint's day was close to the day of our birth and used that as part of our name. I was born close to the feast of St. Francis, so I got the feminine version as my middle name.

My middle name is Kay, which is also my mom's middle name. There is a funny story behind her name - it's Joyce Kay, and Joyce was the name of an ex-girlfriend of my grandfather's! He didn't want either of my mom's names to be able to be shortened to any type of nickname so they chose one syllable names. She's always gone by Kay rather than her first name. I'm sure my grandmother had something to do with that based on where Joyce came from!

Mine is Jeanne. I always hated it growing up, but while I still don't love it, I appreciate it more. I was named after my grandmother. Her name was Virginia but everyone called her Jeanne. Read it as Jean and not Genie Trust me - NO ONE had my middle name! Or my first name for that matter!

My middle name is Marie which was very common when I was growing up. My mother's name is Marie. DD's middle name is Marie, after my mom. I don't remember the last time I heard of a student with Marie as her middle name.

My middle name is Renee. I don't think it's that common but my first name is. In fact, in my tiny private elementary school I was in a class of 12 students. 4 of us had the same first name. My sister's middle name is Dawn and my oldest daughter's is Rose. My youngest has a pretty unique name all together with Rae being her middle name.

I don't have a middle name, for some reason the boys in my family all got middle names and my sister and I don't.

I went to Catholic school and it seemed like every girl I went to school with had some version of Mary (Moira, Maria, Maureen, Marie), with Elizabeth, or Ann.

Sometimes parents went for the hat trick and named their daughter
some variation of all three, like AnnMarie Elizabeth or Mary Elizabeth Anne or MaryAnn Elizabeth.

There is an episode of friends where Joey introduces all his sisters and they all have names that start with Mary.

Mine is Noel; I didn't love it til I understood why I had it. My mom's grandmothers were Nora & Ella and she combined them to make Noel. I like that it has family meaning but it was made just for me.

My mom is in her 50's and has the middle name Kay and I have quite a few friends with moms around her age that have Kay as well.

I don't have a middle name!

My first name and maiden name together had 19 letters. My parents felt that that was enough for a kindergartner to learn how to spell!

My sister's middle names are Marie and Ann. My daughters middle names are Ann (after an aunt that died while I was pregnant) and Denise (after my MIL).

Jo. My sister's middle name is Jo. Our names are one letter apart and we are 9 months and 28 days apart. Everyone thought we were twins growing up. My first name was supposed to be Russella, after my fathers middle name, but thank GOD my mother backed out at the last minute. Now I have a unique name, which I like.

Mine is Anne. (Anne with an E, as I like to say). My grandmother's first name is Anne and my mother's middle name was Anne. If my son had been a girl, I was not planning to carry on the tradition.

I think Ann / Anne is common for my age group. I don't mind it. It's classic.

I also had some friends with Lee or Lynn as middle names.

My middle name is Ryan (I'm female). My mother wanted Ryan as my first name, but my father pulled the veto card. She was a big Ryan's Hope fan

When I was younger, I HATED my middle name. Kids at school didn't get it, and I was terribly teased. Now that I'm older, I love that it is unique, and I would like to have had it as my first name. My first name is too common for people my age. I graduated with 7 other girls with the same name. Ryan would have been a lot more original and fun

I like that my parents did it that way but when my oldest sister had the first grandchild, the spell was broken. As a parent, I couldn't give all my children the same middle names, there were too many that my husband & I were debating upon!

I go by my middle name, which is a very common 1950s name. My parents always intended to use it, rather than my first name--Martha. It is my great grandmother's name. Reversing the names doesn't flow very well and I do like them both together (unusual combination--I have never met anyone with the same name) but it has been a pain to go by a middle name. I once told my mom I wished they had given me her mother's middle name, Lee. Now I am glad I have both and have managed to get through six decades with my middle name, so am at peace with it

I have always HATED my given first name. My nickname is odd as well. I always said that if I moved somewhere where NO ONE knew me I would go with my middle name. We moved here in 1980 and DH was the only one who knew my name. Did I remember my plan? Um, no. So I am still known by my first name.

I like Elaine, by the way.

I've always hated my middle name, but it creates conflict in me because I'm named after my father, who I adored. It's Roberta. Gak. But I loved my dad. It would have been better if my middle name were "Daddy".

My father didn't want anyone named after him. All went fine with the first three, who were boys. He got his way. But the next day after I was born, he had to fly out of town to a meeting. And my mom pulled a fast one on him. She didn't name me "Robert", but she got awfully close.

Dad was not pleased, but it was fine with him after awhile.

Mine's Susan. I don't mind the name, but it never really felt like it fit me. I always felt rather disassociated from it. My mom considered using Dawn as my middle name instead; I think that might have fit me a bit better, but who knows...

I have three older sisters. We were all born in the sixties. Their middle names are Ann, Lynn, and Faith. I always wished I had Faith instead.

I'm an Elizabeth. That's a classic name that seems to retain popularity over time. It's my mom's middle name, and my dad's sister's middle name. That's how I got it.

My college roommate was also an Elizabeth.

Mine is as common as Ann

It's Mary. However, since I've been married I don't use it, I use my maiden name as my middle name.

When I lived in NJ, I guess it was a sign of the times back then, but every girl seemed to have Mary as her first name but was called by both names as in :
Mary Catherine
Mary Ellen
Mary Elizabeth
Mary Christine

It was a riot and then when I moved to New England, no one did that so i guess in NJ they all copied each other, this was in the 60's. Anyway no one seemed to have a middle name there, they all seemed to go by both names.

Mine is Louise. I always hated it, too. It's after both a family friend and great-aunt but I always thought it was old-fashioned.
Tmar, mine is Louise, too, and I've always hated it!

Growing up I hated it...it was not common at all. Now that I am an adult I appreciate because it was my dad's grandmother's name. My mom say she picked my first name and he got to pick the middle. Guess he wanted to honor his grandma.

I'm another Ann! Like Jade said in her post, almost everyone I meet with my first name has Ann for a middle name.

here. Everyone (except 1) person I know with my first name has Marie as a middle name.

It seemed when I was growing up most girls' middle names were Ann(e), Sue, Lynn, or Marie.

My Mom was born in 1941 and hers was Joyce

My DD was born in 1997, and hers is Margaret

My middle name is Grace. I love it. When I was a child, it wasn't very common.

My sister's middle name is Anne. My mother just picked it, there was no reason. My middle
name is after my father and wasn't very common. As a child I wasn't crazy over it, but I grew to love it.

She is Leighann Marie... I got Rhubarb Ann. I am okay with Ann but my father must have been on some other planet when he picked my first name! Even my mom does not like it.

My middle name was Elizabeth, until I got married and took my maiden name as my middle name. Fun fact-every girl my DH dated had the middle name Elizabeth. He thought I somehow knew and was joking when he asked me my middle name once we started dating! Nope, he just likes Elizabeths!

Jane is technically my middle name but my family uses it as an extension to my first which i think is a little bit redneck.... My mom's side is all trailer park people ( who work hard and give the shirts off their backs to anyone) so it is a good fit I suppose.

I know a few people with my middle name. Sister's middle name is Marion which is very uncommon.

My middle name is Danielle. My friend from HS has the same first and middle name as me, and my cousin has the same middle name as me (we also have the same exact initals). Never thought of it as a common middle name but I love Danielle. It's so pretty

Middle Name

Clip to ScrapBook #61

My middle name is Dean (I'm a female). It's a passed down middle name to the youngest in the family except ... I'm the middle child. Hence the reason we tease my younger sister that she was a mistake (oh and her middle name is Marie). Besides my cousins, mother and grandmother (all youngest girls), I've only ever met one other female who had the middle name Dean (a parent of one of my students one year). My first name was unusual too so with my middle name, I hated the two together. Now I like it.

My niece Savanna's middle name is Dean also. Dean is her mom's maiden name, but in the case of her middle name they chose to pronounce it as DeAnn.
