Petty Vent

So here is the situation...
I teach K and every year my students struggle with sight words, which means they then struggle to read. This summer inspired by Jolly Phonics I created an entire sight word program to teach our 50 K sight words. I drew pictures, sang and recorded sight word songs, made an app, and wrote books for everyone of the sight words! It took forever and a lot of time. Well I tried it out this year and it has been working amazing!! My kids love it and they know all their sight words! I tested them on F & P (which our district uses) and they are all on grade level. I have never had results like this before.

Well the thing is in my district we just switched to full-day kindergarten.

My vent is that whenever someone sees my results their response is always, "see how much the full day helps!".

I know that the full day program has helped but I also know that the new way I am teaching sight words this year has helped a lot as well. I feel like I put so much work into the program and now people are going to only credit the full-day program for the success of my students.

Am I just being petty? Should I not let it get to me and just be happy that my students are doing a great job?

You are not being petty. You put a lot of work into an amazing program that works! Maybe the powers that be will appreciate your work when they see your student's progress compared to the other classes. My suggestion would be to sell your program on Teachers Pay Teachers so that you can get some real recognition for your work. I know that iwould be interested in it!

I think you are knowing that the credit will never be given. I am so tired of seeing awesome work done by teachers and they get zilch acknowledgement then some big wig has an idea and it is praised to no end. Sounds like your students are showing the results of your labor. Way to go! You have helped them down the road to reading skills that will serve them throughout their lives!

All over the district, K kids should now be on grade level, right?

They're not?

Then there's something different going on in your classroom.:

Why can't people see that?

How did you go about creating an app?? I would love to know how you did this.

This program sounds fantastic and like it was a lot of work. You deserve a lot of credit for it!! Are the other classes using your program? If not, then PrivateEyes may be on to something with comparing your data to others' data.

I was thinking the same thing as Private Eyes-- there is a comparison group built in with other K in your district- have they had the same increase?

Kudos to you for such initiative and such great results!! I'd be bringing that to the attention of my admin!

That sounds like an awesome accomplishment based on a lot of hard work. I don't think ot is petty to be annoyed. They are downplaying the hard work, knowledge, and instincts it takes to be a successful professional.

My suggestion is to look at the conferences for your state or regional professional organizations. Apply to give a session at their next conference. I am sure you would be selected (and in my experience with my professional organization it is very doable to get selected). Then you get to share your success in a public way and take credit for it in a way that will help other teachers. And it will establish you as an expert. And then your district maybe will recognize your accomplishments once you have been established as an expert and someone they want to "claim." It is like once someone else recognizes you they will want to fall over themselves patting themselves on the back for having managed to get such a great teacher on their staff.

Tell them, "I also started a new program that I spent 100 hours creating this summer. I'm really pleased with their progress from the program. I wish I could separate the two variables to see which one had the greatest size effect. "

Thanks for your listening everyone! I should have clarified that the people mentioned to full-day, did it with good intentions. They were not aware of the program. I guess the real problem is that I feel weird and bragging mentioning it after the comment.

After I vented (which totally helped) I got some good feedback. I might even teach a workshop on it for teachers who would like to use it

pjallday- It was a combination of recording mp3's of me singing the songs (which was terrifying!) and then making it through the website www.appsbar.com It takes some time to figure out but if you play around with it it's not too bad.

Calitech- I did put it on Teacher's Pay Teacher's but I'm no Deanna Jump in the sales department
