Clip to ScrapBook #1

My dsitrict has 5 elementary schools, which each one being renovating or knocked down within next 10 years (4 years have passed already). Here are some of the great functional fetures that we had to have!
1. A HUGE water feature in the front entrance
2, A playground that can pair with an iPhon (except kids and recess aides not have iphons the playgrond)
3. A giant slide going from the second floor to the first floor
3. A sleek modern design from an expensive archtecture firm (and the new buildings have leaked profusly within two years of being built).

ALSO, teacher are to have no theme and no furniture of their own- not even one of those rolling carts are a bean bag.

This is why teachers shuld design schools!

That is absurd!

That much money could have easily been used to increase teacher's salaries.

Our huge urban district is also undergoing a 10 year plan and all buildings will be ďtouchedĒ and will get new furniture. Once they get new furniture teachers wonít be allowed to have their own. My feeling is it wonít be enforced for long.

Luckily they didnít spend money on all that other ridiculousness (they found other ridiculous things to spend money on ).

My school has the giant slide and the kids NEVER use it. What a waste of money!

Our district appropriated all of our technology refresh and some other funds in order to put in new security cameras which include new security procedures. Supposedly the receptionist is supposed to check the computer before buzzing people in. Truthfully out secretary is not typically at her desk as she also covers classrooms, duties, gets supplies, response to crisis calls... P says these things can be checked on phones wherever they are... ummm, not using my phone. And what about the two buildings that are separate the ebuilding the office is in? They are supposed to fence everything in, but that money didnít pass election. Oh, and how does the extra security go along with the email saying we will do less security drills this year?

But keep on doing the electronic testing. Just hope you donít need additional or replaced equipment?

Interesting to hear about the slide! The slide idea is a year away so weíll see what happens. We also have secruity cameras but they only really use them as a de facto bus monitor.

However, if you are able to use it w/ a purpose, that 2nd story slide could be really wonderous item.
At a friend's school the slide is cornered off in a way that kids can only get to it when an adult with the key lets them inside at the top.
The kids love it!
On Fridays, kids in her school who have not gotten in trouble that week get to go down it Friday afternoon. Everyone claps for them as they come down.
It is a huge incentive to a lot of the kids. If some kids are starting to act up even, the thought of the Friday slide can turn some wild ones around. Misbehave and it is a no go Friday!
It would not be effective if you get to go down it just because, "You're special." If mom and dad insist and admin caves, it is useless.
She works in a mid to low income area, but still a lot of her parents don't feel the right to "run the school." The area is one that is still mostly of the belief that kids can earn it next week and it won't kill their kid to learn a lesson.
I love the way it works for them!

I'd be using that giant slide everyday. Every. Single. Day. In fact, I'd go out of my way just to use it.

Why do you need a playground paired up with an iPhone? Does it inform you that there is a swing open for use or something?

Great idea for the slide. That sound like a great incentive! I think the iPhone app for the playground is to tell the kids how to use it?! Like a 4th grader doesn’t know how to use a simple climbing wall . I’ve never used it, but it tells you how to use the equipment and ways that you can use it?! But again no students or recess aides/paras have their iPhones on them so who knows .

maybe was set up so the kids would get pushes on the swings. So they didn't have to move their legs back and forth to move. Things are changing so fast!

Not really. All the multiple pots of money are earmarked for certain things, and most canít be switched from one to another.

If only every school could consider the needs of their students like this school did.
