Got a parent email asking if I know what supplies I will need yet.... we arent officially back till tomorrow for teacher prep and students dont start till a week later.

Back story really quick. Im opening a new school that has not gotten everything it needs to be ready for next week. I am the media specialist and worked on my own time- gladly- to set up my center and work on textbooks and set up technology and also part of the planning committee for the pd this week.

We had voluntary open house last week. Weve been busy just trying to get the school open. On our own time.

This parent emailed me yesterday... the kicker? She is also a teacher.
No sorry supplies for my one class have not been on my mind so far when I was just trying to get the school set up.

I answered nicely but also let her know I've been busy with other things.

okay rant over.

It's annoying to be bothered during vacation and especially when people are busy with something as time-consuming as opening a new school.

Parents, as you know, are trying to take advantage of the school supply sales which in my part of the country began in mid-July. Teacher parents are probably trying to get everything bought for their own kids before they themselves are in the throes of teacher workdays and the rush of the first month of school.

Probably trying to shop tax-free weekend, but I see why it is frustrating.

Maybe I'm reading this incorrectly, but it sounds like she is wanting to help supply things and will be shopping and wanted to get stuff for your school as well. Sounds like a great thing! It sounds like you are stressed and not ready for that question, which I get, but it doesn't feel like she was being inconsiderate by any stretch

I hope things go smoothly. I cannot imagine the stress and pressure you are feeling right now.

Iím with Gracekrispy on this...

I go back tomorrow, meet the teacher is on Friday and students bring their supplies to their classroom at that time. Most parents have everything bought prior to now, especially teachers starting back to work this week. Our supply lists are posted online at the end of the previous school year.

Iím even more surprised that as the media specialist you have a student supply list. Or was she just asking if you needed donations?
Our ďspecialsĒ teachers (PE, Music, Art) donít have supply list for the kids, only the classroom teachers do. They will ask us for tissues/hand sanitizers and if we have any extra we give it to them.

I know there is supposed to be no such thing as a stupid question, but . . .

I'm sorry you're so overwhelmed! You certainly have a lot on your plate. Hang in there, and I hope that things smooth out and you have a great year despite the early stress.

Is it customary to not buy the supplies until after school has started in your area? If so, I get it. If not, I'm still lost, since people would need to know what to get ahead of time before school starts. Once open house (or "met the teacher" or whatever it's called) happens, I feel like parents think it's school season.

Grace we have a basic supply list that went out. On it it said anything specific for classes would be given out on the first day.

The general supply lists go out on the website before school starts normally, but anything that is specific to certain classes goes home the day school starts.

The open house we had was for schedule pick up. Normally it would have been held during this upcoming week, but its a new school and there are different things that are happening.

Just change your perspective.

If someone wants to donate items, (I.e. give you free items) be happy. That is not a problem.

The stress may be coming from your anticipation of constant emails from this or other parents. You will have a successful year!

Change your perspective and breathe.

This is why we have to have our supply lists done and copies made before we leave for the summer. Parents pick one up from the office and shop before school starts-not after. I think you might be lucky to get much of anything after school starts. Once school starts everyone is struggling to get back into a schedule -no one is running extra errands around here after school starts.

I don't have kids, but I am a planner and not knowing what I will need to buy for the school year would drive me crazy. The sales are going on right now. So from the other side I totally understand her question.

I'm with the ones who don't understand how someone wanting to help or be prepared for the year is a vent. I understand venting that you don't want to think about school because I don't either, but venting about the person seems odd.

Also it seems odd to me not to know what you'll need. We have to have our full supply lists ready to mail out before we check out for the year.

I would hate it if I had to wait until after the sales were over to go back to school shopping!

Gromit- I teach in middle school. A brand new just about to open middle school. We have a general supply list that went out already and it said that students would find out what else they needed on the first day.

I dont know exactly what I want from my kiddos because this school is brand new and we are still getting everything in. What I have this year is much different than what I had last year for this class. So what I wanted last year is not going to be what I need this year.

And if you think that by waiting one week means sales arent going to be going on...yeah, no. They are still on and will be.

Around here, the sales are over by the time school starts but if they're not near you, that's nice.

I still don't understand, but go ahead and rant.

Your feelings are your feelings, so if you want to hold onto it, thatís your prerogative. Just because she sent the email doesnít mean that you need to a) read it or b) respond to it.

Of course, once school has started, she might not have any time to pick up the specific things you want.
