Unit on Heroes

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I'm going to be starting next year doing a unit on heroes. We use Imagine It, but we always wait a few weeks because of testing and getting groups together etc. So I thought I'd come up with a hero unit and talk about character and what makes a good hero. Are there any good books out there I can do as a read aloud to 5th graders? It could be a well known hero... a fictional hero... or someone who shows great character. Thanks!

Wilma Unlimited is a great picture book about how a little girl survives Polio and goes on to become an Olympic runner.

Martin's Big Words written by the sister of Martin Luther King Jr.

I did a Heroes GLAD unit last year and I am doing one this year as well. I focused on MLK, Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, Christa McAuliffe, Harriet Tubman and Amelia Earhart.

I'm sure that this is a little late, but maybe it will help for next year.
I always start out the year with a unit on hero's too. I focus on Terry Fox. We read the book 'Run' by Eric Walters and a few biographies on Terry as well. I also do some shared writing that I call "Meet my Hero". I write a discriptive paragraph on Terry Fox (because he's my hero). We then do another writing activity where the students write a recipe for a hero. I really is a fun/short unit where I get to learn a lot about them and their writing ability.
