Info for Parents

Could you please help me with several problems? What kind of information about teaching do you send to parents. Do you print term or monthly outline for them? Does your calendar for parents include children's schedule by subject? Do you release worksheets on a daily or weekly basis? Do you assign any homework in Grade 2? How do the parents know what you teach the kids? Do you consider informing parents about teaching necessary? How you go about the problem? If it is a problem for you. Thank you for your help.

Updates to parents

Our curriculum and report cards can be viewed online by our parents so they know exactly what we are teaching. I send home an introduction to each math unit with suggested games. I try to keep a calendar updated on our class webpage but it is just special events and outings. I do send an email once a month with an update of our activities and include new topics of study. The only homework I have is that I ask they read 30 minutes a night. If parents want more information about what their child is learning, they will ask and hopefully they will ask their kids too!

In my board, we send home a "communication plan" at the beginning of the year. It's an overview of what will be covered in each subject, classroom expectations, how to contact the teacher, etc. (very brief - about 2 pages) The subject overviews are also visible on PowerSchool, where parents can log in and see their childrens' marks.

At the beginning of the year I also send home a copy of the student schedule so parents have a general idea of what our day looks like, and when our specialist classes are. I actually have to do that again because our French schedule keeps changing...

I teach grade five and don't do a monthly calendar, but I know many lower elementary teachers who do. Theirs usually have birthdays/holidays, gym/music/library days, assemblies, etc.

In Nova Scotia, we are not supposed to assign formal homework in grades K-3. Most teachers do a home reading program, and some will send home math games or family activities, but they are all optional. Even in grade five, I don't give much homework (home reading, practice math facts and word study once a week is it)

In grade five, students keep all worksheets in duotangs/binders, though I may have them take sheets home at the end of units.

I would say that it's important that parents have a general idea about what you are teaching, though they don't need to know every detail of the day. I wouldn't create more work for yourself trying to inform them about everything! I know that some curriculums come with parent notes already done for each unit (our math and French do), you could check if yours do.

I saw a neat idea on PT at the beginning of the year that might help keep families informed. The teacher and students had talked about how kids are asked "How was your day? What did you learn?" when they get home from school, and they spent a few minutes at the end of each day discussing what they had learned that day. I haven't tried it but I'd like to.
