Bulletin Board Titles:

I luv your monument theme idea a lot but there is so much controversy about historical (political) monuments in the US that you never know which one will be discredited???? Maybe National Park monuments. . . with a nature environmental theme???

Is this the direction you would like to go . . . found this in archives by coincidence posted by Connie for patriotic theme

--"State of the Union" - class newsletter
--"Constitution" - class rules
--"Department of ___________" or "Secretary of __________" or "President's/Teacher's Cabinet - Use government departments to label your job board (line leader, door holder, paper passer/collector, garbage, librarian, board cleaner, or whatever your classroom jobs may be) like Secretary of Classroom Library, Secretary of State (line leader), etc. Your #1 assistant could be the vice president.

Of course, the teacher is the president . . . commander in chief . . .Air Force one commander etc. . .

Do you want to include world wide monuments like the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and associate it with a travel/geography theme?

If you have a smaller bulletin board in the classroom, I would do a rotating thing highlighting one monument at a time - photo(s), a map of where it is, some facts about it, etc. I would also open it up to students if they have visited a monument on vacation. They can be in charge of the display for that one, and maybe tell the class about it.

For geography, you could do a "monument road trip" and have the kids plot a route through some major monuments and learn a little about each state they pass through.

For creative writing, have them choose a monument and write a story about it - the Statue of Liberty comes to life, mystery at Big Ben, Curious George on the Eiffel Tower...

Yes! I love that idea but I would only do the first one and then assign kiddos to do the rest. I want to get into why monuments are made? Who gets on and who decides? Who do they feel deserves a monument and why? I really want them thinking about them in general.

Four Freedoms Monument

I live in a city that has a Four Freedoms Monument and have displayed a BB during a social studies unit on local history that tied in that local monument and others. Our 4th grade curriculum is Indiana history so we actually have been able to do a field trip where we went around the area and looked at several different important local sites. Depending on where you live maybe you could tie in some local monuments to make a more hands-on connection. Can't wait to see what you do.
