How is math taught?

I have taught middle school math for 10 years. It seems that more and more students are coming in without knowing how to do basic subtraction, multiplication, or long division. I KNOW this is taught in primary grades but when I re-teach to the ones who struggle, they act like it's a foreign language.

I know in my state, the reason they struggle with math is because of a big reading/writing initiative in elementary school. Everything else has been put on the back burner and kids are given calculators.

But in 6th grade, part of their standardized test is math fluency without a calculator. I show them borrowing, counting up, multiplying each place value, divide/multiply/subtract/bring down.

Are there some new methods going on for math that I could try? I'm looking for basic primary grade stuff.

You don't want to know. It's all about letting them figure it out for themselves.

Our school uses Singapore math. In the younger grades it's all about making 10s. Students look for combinations that make 10s and try to fill up tens frames when adding.

Example:

7 + 8
Which is closer to 10? 8--it is 2 away from 10
Make a new problem:
10 + 5=15

I don't know if that is helpful, but that is a strategy we use often.
