RL1.2 Central Message or Lesson

I need some help interpreting RL 1.2 (first grade):

Quote:
Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
For example, if we were reading Rainbow Fish, would the students tell the lesson that the character learned ("Rainbow Fish learned that sharing makes him feel happy.") or would students tell what they learned from the story ("I learned that it's nice to share with friends.")?

Thank you so much for your help!

I usually try to get my students to come up with their ideas of the central message first- and with stories I find that the children have differing views on what the central message might be, and I think that is perfectly okay. Then I just share what I think is the central message. None are deemed more right than others. They do however need to prove to me the reasoning behind their thinking.

The students tell the lesson that they, the students, learned. It's a difficult skill for young readers, and takes lots and lots of modeling.

There is an awesome site that breaks down each ELA CCSS for each grade level. Google "Tulare CCSS". Click on ELA. Scroll down to "bookmarks" and click on your grade level. There is a half page per standard that includes voc and question stems. There are lesson plan templates with the same info just above the bookmarks. HTH.
