I am teaching a lesson on math for Kindergarten in a couple weeks. This will be my first time teaching math, I have always taught reading and phonics lessons. Does anyone have any good lesson ideas?

I'm not in kinder, but you may want to ask on the kindergarten board also.

Going along with Sbkangas5's question, you need to find out what the kindergarten class will be working on at the time of your lesson. A lesson meant for February may be totally inappropriate for October, as the kids haven't yet learned the prerequisite skills.

I was thinking of teaching measurement and data, so classifying objects into a certain category and then having the students count the objects.

If you are doing classifying objects, I really like using hula hoops and making a venn diagram with them on the floor. First I put the hoops apart so they are just two circles. Then I give all of the kids an object, and I tell them how we are going to sort the objects. The second time we sort, I make sure that there are one or two objects that fit into both categories. Instead of showing them how we overlap the circles, I let them try to figure out what they can do (they usually figure it out on their own - sometimes I have to guide it). Then the next time we sort them I make sure that there are a few objects that don't fit into either category, and we talk about how you can put some outside of the circles as well if they don't fit. It's a fun lesson and really gets the kids thinking and problem solving.
