I taught for 31 years and have been retired from the public school system for 6 years (now teach in a private PK). We have never had Columbus Day off, ever.

I've never had Columbus Day off. My (non-teacher) friend said something about having tomorrow off because it's technically a federal holiday, and it took me the longest time to figure out what she could possibly be talking about!

I've actually been off since Friday. Nice 4 day weekend! DH took Friday and Monday off. We've done nothing, other than adopt a dog yesterday.

We are off all week for fall break. Some years it includes Columbus Day, but not always.

My DH is off tomorrow and Tuesday, then has a staff day Wednesday.

As a kid when I lived in first worked in Massachusetts we always had Columbus Day off. I've been in New Hampshire for 30 years and we never have Columbus day off. Today the kids have it off though as they have made it a PD day for us this year.

Public schools have it off today. Don't think it is a PD for teachers.
Sure hope not, they deserve a break.

Yes, I am off, woohoo!!! I have always had Columbus Day off, even as a kid. Love the day off, but hate four days weeks. They always seem longer to me than five day weeks . I plan on doing a whole lot of nothing today!

Columbus Day is not considered a holiday for our largely Native American school population. I once had a student (second grader, very intuitive ) whose mother emailed me that he was nervous I would do some Columbus Day activity and he would have to object. I assured her it was business as usual in my class. I can respect that.

Like Cat Woman, I am not down with Columbus Day. He was a murdering rapist. If we were to celebrate something, I'd prefer Indigenous Peoples' Day. We don't have today off, anyway.

Dh had an ancestor on the second Columbus expedition.

He also has Native American ancestry.

Not to mention African (slave) ancestors.

He does not celebrate Columbus Day...too conflicted.

Here in Maine we have always had Columbus Day off.

The Friday before used to be a state wide teacher inservice day. I don't believe it is anymore, but we have PD the Friday before giving the students a 4 day weekend.

One of my boys and I are off. He's in a Catholic HS and I think they had a PD today. I'm in a Catholic elementary/middle and we used a "floating holiday" for today. P tries to schedule those days so we get a 3-day weekend each month.

joined the Knights of Columbus when he came back from the service. I educated him on who Columbus really was. He decided, not for that reason alone, to no longer be a member. He joined the volunteer firefighters instead. Thought it was a better use of his time.

When I lived in NY we always had it off, but not on the West Coast where I live now. As others have said, I'm ok with not having a genocide celebration.

(Especially since we'll have this Friday off. It's a state wide in-service day, but my district doesn't feel like paying to improve their teachers, so...3-day weekend!)
