Books on kinder level

A friend asked me for advice and I've never taught kinder or 1st, so I thought I'd see what great advice you all have! Her daughter is in first grade, spelling/ writing on a 2nd grade level, but reading at a mid kinder level. She doesn't understand why she can write words but not read them or blend them out loud. Does anyone have experience or advice about this? She'd also like book recommendations on her level, so if you have any, I'd love to hear them! Thank you!

Iíve had a couple of kids like that, not a lot, but Iíve had them. What I noticed was that they had an easier time chunking as they were sounding out to write the words than sounding out to decode. When I brought it to one studentís attention, she explained that there were just so many words on the page in a book that it got all jumbled up. When she was writing, all she was working on was the one word she was putting on paper. After that, I got her one of those things (I forget what they're called) that looks like an index card with a thin strip of cellophane in the middle. It allowed her to just see one line of text at a time. It didn't cure the problem, but it did help a lot. Since then, Iíve done the same with other students Iíve noticed having similar struggles, and it's help them too.

I'm with seenthelight on the guided reading strips!

Some kids are helped by colored filters over the page, too.

If they have access to a Kindle or similar device for at-home practice, you also might suggest increasing the font size.
