Quiet zone

Clip to ScrapBook #1

As part of our schoolwide PBIS initiative this year, each teacher is required to have a spot set aside in their room as a “quiet zone” with a comfy chair or rug.

The purpose behind this is to give the students a space where one of them can voluntarily go to de-escalate or calm down, or where the teacher can ask them to go if they see an issue developing with the student.

Many of the other teachers are going to call it their quiet or chill zone. I was thinking of calling it the chill-out zone. And then my brain, being what it is, went from that to the idea if calling it the Fro-zone, as in Frozone from The Incredibles. I could put a poster of Frozone there and when I ask a kid to chill out or they make the choice to chill out, they would go to the Fro-zone.

My wife thinks it would be more appropriate for younger kids, as I will have 6th graders. I feel that this kind of humor/approach could/should work with pretty much any grade level.

Thoughts? Input?

Be wary of making it an unintended incentive. That is, if students perceive it as a “cool” place some will abuse the intervention just to get out of work. Consider it a neutral place - not flashy nor a dungeon. Also, watch how it works. If the same students are using it over and over it’s not working.

I think the Fro-zone works for any age that has seen the Incredibles, and I kind of want to steal the idea.

If its purpose is well-modeled, a fun name won’t turn it into a cool hangout.
