It would depend on what you have. Are you looking for 3rd grade books, books to challenge, or books for your low readers?

3rd Grade: Beverly Clearly, Dork Diaries, animal books, Diary of a wimpy kid

How is your nonfiction selection? I know that is the area I tend to lack in. How about biographies? Joke books? Poetry books?

~ "Who Was ______?" A series of easy to read biographies by various authors. (i.e. Who Was Mark Twain?, Who Was Jim Henson?) There are a lot of them, available through Scholastic. This series is hugely popular at my school.

~"Ellie McDoodle" series by Barshaw

~ "Big Nate" books by Pierce

~ "Emily Windsnap" books by Kessler

~ "Baseball Card Adventure" series by Gutman

On the Scholastic March book order they had an awesome deal for teachers! You could get a huge set of Geronimo Stilton books for $96.00 I think. I had plenty of bonus points so I just decided to use them instead - It was only 1200 points! I ended up getting a second set to donate to our school library too. I think it would be perfect for third grade especially for the boys!

Non fiction and biography....children need to learn how to read these genres and as adults, these are extremely popular. With non fiction, you dont have to worry too much about levels...although the books should be for children, because we read non fiction very differently.

Six Traits Books?

Don't laugh, but I'd spend the money on picture books that tie in to the lessons on writing fix dot com/ Ruth Culham-recommended books. There are some wonderful writing lessons that are supported by these books.

I have a great collection of these books, but it took more money than I'd like to admit and more time than I care to mention tracking down some of the titles. That said, it was worth every penny/minute.
