Fraction Project

Clip to ScrapBook #1

My class (5th graders) is just wrapping up adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. I am looking for a culminating project. Any ideas??? I know recipe books are always an idea, but typically they require multiplication and division of fractions and they have not learned that yet! Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!

On the hundredth day of school my kids have to choose 5 fractions from 7 denominators and add them up to equal 100/100. They will then use the 5 fractions (once they have converted the denominator to 100) to make a picture using 5 different colors of beans.

The six denominators are 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, and 50.

My favorite was the girl whose project said "I Hate Math" in beans.

So how does that exactly work with the beans? They will convert each denominator to 100 and find 7 numerators that add up to 100, then what? Is this on paper or how do the beans come into play? I am a new 5th grade teacher and I have posted on the fifth grade board under 'newer.' I am about to teach fractions but do not have a smartboard, manipulatives, or technology. I have a computer with a projector but that's it. Any thoughts or ideas besides using fraction strips? What about game ideas or sheets I can print off so it is a bit more game oriented?
Thanks!

I guess my other post is not going to make it on here since I posted my email but didn't know I could not do that. Just wanted you to explain the bean thing a bit more. They find seven numerators that add up to 100/100 and then what? Is this on paper or how do the beans come into play?

It's a mosaic. They make a picture with 5 different colors of beans, 100 beans total. For example:

3/20 yellow = 15 yellow beans
1/10 red =10 red beans
2/5 white 40 white beans
5/50 green= 10 green beans
1/4 blue= 25 blue beans
