Do you play Hangman in class? Think it is inappropriate?

I do! Why would it be inappropriate? The whole death thing? I've literally never thought about it.

When we have a few minutes left. I use a word from the passage we just read. Kids who have just complained about reading the passage over and over again , read the passage over and over again to find the right word. I just smile.

I am a resource teacher and I let my students earn an academic game at the end of each group for good behavior. Occasionally I'll do hangman. I agree with PPs that it would never occur to me that someone might think it was inappropriate.

twist

I play it a lot, but with a twist ( think I found the idea in a 4 blocks book, was it called Rivet?)

I choose words from our lessons.

Students have to ask a relevant question' first: is it a verb? does it relate to space? is it made of metal?....
If their question is relevant, they can suggest a letter.
If their question is not relevant ( we already said it's a living thing and they ask if it's made of metal...), they can't and lose points.
All the letters have to be discovered before they can say the answer.

They get really creative and find lots of good questions!

Last thing: I don't like the traditional hangman symbol so I draw a smiley, with 3 curly hairs and 2 ears

There is an online version that my kiddos love. They argue about who gets to be the one to input the spelling list for the week. It has really helped some of my poorer spellers because they have to be really careful typing the list or their classmates will give them a hard time because they then can't guess the word!

I renamed it, Build a Snowman, our whatever character they'd like to use

Hanging didn't sound nice for 2-3 graders!!!

The guidance counselor at my school reprimanded me in front of my class for playing hangman! She said I should not be playing a game that supported violence with my class.

My students have always loved it and they actually think about letter patterns when trying to figure it out.

I think that's silly. It isn't advocating we go hang people, for crying out loud.

As a sub, I've played it tons of time at the end of the day. Waiting for busses can be chaotic if you don't organize something.

I like the snowman idea if you're worried, though!

used to play "make a man". I adopted that terminology many years ago. Kids still love it.

I don't play it much, but my late bus kids like to play while we are waiting for their dismissal. I have never thought that it was inappropriate.

Guess my word or wheel of fortune

We would build a pumpkin or a fish or ocean scene or a bunny etc to play guess my word or wheel of fortune. This version seemed better for our first graders.
