Does your district/school have a catalog of surplus furniture (desks, chairs, tables, shelves, etc.) that you can request?

If so, how easy is it to request furniture?

My district does have surplus furniture teacher can request, but we have to fill out a form where we have to justify why we are requesting the furniture and then ask our P to approve the request.

No. We can call the warehouse and then head down there.

Yeah, we just go pick through the warehouse. It's great right after a school remodels--tons of good stuff. Ordinarily, it's just crap that's too old/worn out to be of use.

Our staff usually puts out an email to everyone if they are getting rid of something, or puts it in the auditorium during breaks and it's first come first served.

It's nearly impossible to get new furniture anymore. When I first started teaching here 23 years ago, you could just order what you needed. Now you ask, but you're usually turned down. The chairs in my classroom are probably 30 or 40 years old.

No, and we are told every year that there will be no furniture purchases! I have had to scrounge around to get what I have in my classroom! One of our schools was closing and no one was allowed to go and check out the furniture except our principals--and I watched as the custodians unloaded most of the stuff in a dumpster! It makes me sick....

We have a warehouse of used stuff. We can go there or call and ask for something in particular. If it is large, they deliver it to the school. A charter school is my district just closed down and the warehouse is full of practically new stuff.

No, we can't request. The part that makes me really MAD about furniture in my district is that schools send surplus furniture to a unit downtown. Then, they auction it off! There is no opportunity for other schools to get it. My building is 40 years old with a lot of original furnishings. I see some of the newer schools in the district getting rid of furniture that is much nicer than what we have in our building.
