Cumulative Record Requirements

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Two of my students are transferring to a different school district.

My school business admin told me I was not allowed to write on the cumulative record folder, the testing data I have, or the portion showing the students were in my class this year.

We do not have a principal.

She said the teachers never, ever write on the folders.

I have taught twenty years and every district before this one had specific parts of the state mandated folder teachers were required to complete.

Sigh.

I feel like I am in the twighlight zone.

I guess I'm the opposite - teachers have never written on or inserted anything in the cum folder. They are kept in the office, where we can access them there if we need to see something in them, but we don't write on them at all. The office puts any required paperwork in. The report cards do have the teacher's name on them.

Sorry you're dealing with frustration!

Cums

Up until very, very recently, one of the end of the year duties was to deal with each child’s cum. We had to fill out strengths, weaknesses, attendance, special requirements, plus add in current report card and latest DRA.

Now the office staff files all necessary paper work and apparently no one has to fill out the boxes on the folders anymore.

Sounds like less work for you! I hate writing cums.

It's most likely a change due to legal concerns. These new rules mean a district can now control information and cover their butt should there be a lawsuit. I have always written notes on the cume however just factual data notes. Look at your state's Ed code and be sure to keep copies of your student records for a few years .

Never wrote in cumulative records...

My school places a copy of the student report card in the folder and any testing scores that were official. The Main Office secretaries handled the transfer of records when the new school requested them.

We never wrote anything on cum folders when a student transferred to a different school. At the end of the school year we updated some of the forms inside, but that was about it.

Nineteen years in. We always complete the section on the back of the cum folder when a student transfers. This includes my name, school year and grades.

Every year we put copies of their report card and Aimsweb testing into the cum folder. That's all we do.

Same school 5 different principals over the years. What we have to do for cums changes with each one. I just wait till the end of the year when I hear what is required. Some want grades written, some do not. Some want Passed or retained. Some only want teacher and attendance. Weird.

Thank you for the replies. I greatly appreciate your different experiences. I am going to let this issue slide right on by to the document what I was directed to do and not worry about it.
