Gotta brag on an old student

This kid is 14 now and came to me as a former speed kid who's mom was told she would never leave the sped room. She gained about 4 grade levels of reading ability in less than 3 years, but still had major struggles in math when she left my school. In sixth grade she took a free fencing class and fell in love with the sport.

Her mom and I have stayed in touch for the last couple years and I still spend time with the kid every few months.

Now a homeschooled 8th grader who tests at grade level in almost everything, she is fencing in the Junior Olympics tomorrow in Columbus! She qualified in a meet locally on her first try. This is absolutely unheard of.

I'm so proud of Katie. (This is not the name she fences under. She uses her full first name that's from another language.) She's always gonna be the tiny little blond girl who walked into my room with a major speech issue and proud of the heritage of her birth country. She blossomed in my class for almost 3 years and has blossomed even more since she started homeschooling.

I love this story! It is such a great reminder that everyone has gifts that may not always be visible in the classroom. Good luck, Katie!!

Wonderful story Zephie! These are the things we need to hold on to when the craziness and insanity of work issues drives us nuts. Students are more than test scores.
