Clip to ScrapBook #1

I was gifted 100 dollars for my classroom library. I teach 4th grade. Any must have books, at a variety of levels and genres? Any books stand out that I should avoid for inappropriateness? I'll look them up on Common Sense Media before putting them on the list, but looking for ideas! I obviously can't post my classroom library, so I may have a lot of what you mention, but any help is appreciated!

Readers that age love series books!

lower and on-level:
the Ramona Quimby books
the Peter & Fudge books
The World According to Humphrey (and there are some more)

higher-level:
Harry Potter (of course!)
Percy Jackson

And I would definitely get some non-fiction, too! Sometimes I find they're an easier buy-in for the reluctant readers.

Also, do they still publish Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books? Those might be a hit as well.

The fourth graders at my school loved the “Who Was?” series of books. Lots and lots to choose from. I think there are around 150 titles in the series.

Oh, yeah! - I definitely second the "Who Was...?" books.

And I forgot the "I Survived..." series too. My own son loved them!

I like the Who Would Win? books with the Killer Whale vs. Great White Shark, for example. There are many of these with many different animals, and they are full of facts, but they get the students' attention by pitting the two animals against each other. Maybe you already know about them, but they are great! They're by Jerry Pallotta and Rob Bolster.

Dav Pilky is popular with boys with chapter books that struggling readers enjoy like Captain Underpants and the Ricky Ricotta series. Lots of humor that age group loves!

Try Dan Gutman's books. I have a couple of lower, reluctant reader girls in my 5/6 class who are excited and devouring them.

Yes, Dan Gutman! I used to love doing a novel study with the book The Kid Who Became President!
