Calling Families

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I emailed and messaged kids last week. Today I called all the parents/guardians in my first class. There are 18 kids. I talked to two parents at the time. Another emailed me after she got my voicemail. I left a few voicemails. All the others were not accepting calls, didn't have voicemail set up, were disconnected, or had a full voicemail box. Two answered, then hung up on me before I got finished saying who I was.

This must be what telemarketers feel like.

So sorry! It is just sad.

I had a similar reaction from one family. I was able to easily reach all others, and they were pleasant and very appreciative of what we are trying to do. Please try not to let this group get you down. Our admin has been wonderful and just keeps telling us that all we can do is try, reach out to them and attempt contact, if they wont participate there is really nothing you can do, just document what you did. It feels like such a waste of time.

And this is why I really hope we don't get the directive to call families

Ima, I also teach 8th grade in a very rural area. Anyway, we were calling families last week and one of the teachers on my team called the number given by a family, and got McDonaldís! And no, no one in the family worked there. It would almost be funny if it wasnít so sad.

If you HAVE to actually make contact, you could consider sending a text. Most people don't answer calls from unknown number and don't really do voicemail any more.

I'm also hoping we don't get a directive to call families. My dad works at a private school and even in that setting he has two families who are refusing all communication.

We got the directive today to call all parents. I sent an email first stating what I was going to say in the phone call and asking for a response. I also sent a Remind message asking for them to check their email for an update. Tomorrow, Iím going to contact those who did not respond today. Iím fearing some of the same responses you all got. 😬

Last Friday I had 60 students who hadn't finished or even started my eLearning, so I emailed all 60 students at their school accounts and was able to email 45 parents through school email, as well. The other 15 parents I called and was glad I did.

One parent asked where he could see the eLearning his daughter needed to complete (8th graders don't share much with mom and dad.) Another put me on the phone with her son to help with his iPad connection issues. Several thanked me for calling. A few had full voicemail boxes or disconnected numbers, which I expected.

I think trying to keep some kind of connection is the biggest concern right now. Parents, students, schools, and teachers are lost and confused. It's a scary time for everyone right now.

Those of you who are expected to call parents, how are you expected to do that? Are you using your personal cell or home phone? That is a hill I am willing to defend. There is no way I would start calling with my personal cell, I am entitled to personal privacy including my personal phone number. Ridiculous.

Iím using a Google Voice number on my personal cell phone.

Today I sent text messages, and I got way better responses. Iím using text again tomorrow. Almost all kids had at least one adult in the household with a cell phone.

Before we left school, we had the kids give us their personal cell numbers, so we contact them that way, too.

I think I'm going to try texts this week. I know I'm not much of a phone person, so I would definitely rather have a text from a teacher.

If admin directs...

In our district, admins have district issued phones. When they call, it's from a work phone. I don't think they should have the right to tell teachers to use their personal phones. a work around like Google Voice is a good idea.

I agree with this. We also have School Status with our district, so you can text/call through it and it keeps a record of what was said. If you don't have that option or something similar, I would definitely text first.

How have you contacted them the rest of the year? School phone?

All you can do is try and keep a running document of all the ones you tried and failed.

*Just realized this is the vent board, so you may not have been looking for advice. Sorry you're having a tough time with it.
